Singles – First Round: (2) Maria Sharapova def. Olga Puchkova 6-0 6-0

First match up, first match done. There isn’t much else to say except that it keeps Maria Sharapova in the hunt for #1 while leaving Olga Puchkova still below #100.

Singles – First Round: (4) Agnieszka Radwanska def. (WC) Bojana Bobusic 7-5 6-0

Ten straight wins for Agnieszka Radwanska, but she remains at #4.

Singles – First Round: (5) Angelique Kerber def. Elina Svitolina 6-2 6-4

Angelique Kerber has almost no chance of rising above #5 this week, but she is at least strengthening her grip on that spot.

Singles – First Round: (6) Li Na def. Sesil Karatantcheva 6-1 6-3

Sesil Karatantcheva again falls short of the Top Hundred.

Singles – First Round: (9) Samantha Stosur def. Kai-Chen Chang 7-6(7-3) 6-3

After two misfires in the first two weeks of the year, Samantha Stosur finally adds some points. For the moment, this even moves her ahead of Petra Kvitova in the contest for #8 — but Kvitova hasn’t played yet.

Singles – First Round: (11) Marion Bartoli def. Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-2 6-4

Anabel Medina Garrigues, who has been hurting, will fall to around #60.

Singles – First Round: (13) Ana Ivanovic def. Melinda Czink 6-2 6-1

It’s hard to believe that Melinda Czink will be able to stay in the Top Hundred at this rate.

Singles – First Round: (15) Dominika Cibulkova def. (WC) Ashleigh Barty 3-6 6-0 6-1

Dominika Cibulkova defends her points, putting her at #13 in safe points for the moment.

Singles – First Round: (18) Julia Goerges def. (Q) Vera Dushevina 7-5 2-6 6-4

Vera Dushevina remains well below #100.

Singles – First Round: (19) Ekaterina Makarova def. (Q) Michelle Larcher de Brito 6-2 7-5

Ekaterina Makarova will almost certainly need at least one more win to stay Top Thirty.

Singles – First Round: (22) Jelena Jankovic def. Johanna Larsson 6-2 6-2

Jelena Jankovic earns her first decent result of the year, but she is well below #25 in safe points.

Singles – First Round: (23) Klara Zakopalova def. Chanelle Scheepers 6-1 6-2

Klara Zakopalova lost her opener last year, so she is getting close to the Top Twenty.

Singles – First Round: (25) Venus Williams def. Galina Voskoboeva 6-1 6-0

Venus Williams was the second player through — and, unlike Maria Sharapova who managed to finish first, Venus has nothing to defend. Every win she earns is likely to help her ranking. We’d guess that this won’t be enough to make her Top Twenty, but it won’t take much more. Galina Voskoboeva, who was defending 160 points, appears bound out of the Top Hundred.

Singles – First Round: (27) Sorana Cirstea def. Coco Vandeweghe 6-4 6-2

Sorana Cirstea needs one more win to defend her points, but this may be enough to keep her Top Thirty.

Singles – First Round: (30) Tamira Paszek def. Stefanie Voegele 4-6 6-4 7-5

Much tougher than it should have been for Tamira Paszek, but she wasn’t defending anything, so she appears certain to climb in the rankings.

Singles – First Round: Ksenia Pervak def. (32) Mona Barthel 7-5 2-6 6-4

Mona Barthel was the only seed to lose on the opening day, and she was defending 160 points. She will fall out of the Top Forty.

Singles – First Round: Alize Cornet def. Marina Erakovic 7-5 6-7(3-7) 10-8

Alize Cornet is getting close to the Top Thirty, although this isn’t enough to put her there.

Singles – First Round: (Q) Chan Yung-Jan def. Daniela Hantuchova 6-1 1-6 6-1

The disasters continue for Daniela Hantuchova. She had third round points to defend, and will be falling to #55 or lower. Probably lower.

Singles – First Round: Heather Watson def. Alexandra Cadantu 2-6 6-3 6-2

Heather Watson appears certain to stay Top Fifty after this.

Singles – First Round: Irina-Camelia Begu def. Arantxa Rus 6-4 6-2

This should put Irina-Camelia Begu into the Top Fifty.

Singles – First Round: Kirsten Flipkens def. Nina Bratchikova 6-4 6-3

Kirsten Flipkens may well make the Top Forty.

Singles – First Round: Kristyna Pliskova def. (WC) Sacha Jones 6-3 6-2

This should easily put Kristyna Pliskova in the Top Hundred.

Singles – First Round: Lucie Hradecka def. Kiki Bertens 6-2 7-6(10-8)

Kiki Bertens loses a few points and will fall below #60.

Singles – First Round: (WC) Madison Keys def. Casey Dellacqua 6-4 7-6(7-0)

This should suffice to put Madison Keys in the Top Hundred. She’s off to quite a start this year.

Singles – First Round: (Q) Maria Joao Koehler def. (Q) Karin Knapp 3-6 6-3 6-3

Karin Knapp will probably rise a little, but she stays in the #120 range.

Singles – First Round: Misaki Doi def. Petra Martic 6-3 6-4

Petra Martic wasn’t defending anything, so she will probably stay a little below #60.

Singles – First Round: Olga Govortsova def. Pauline Parmentier 2-6 6-3 6-2

This was the very first three-set match of the tournament, and it lets Olga Govortsova defend her points. But Pauline Parmentier fails to defend hers; she will probably fall below #70.

Singles – First Round: Romina Oprandi def. Tsvetana Pironkova 4-6 7-5 6-2

Tsvetana Pironkova will probably be around #40.

Singles – First Round: Stephanie Foretz Gacon def. Camila Giorgi 6-2 6-3

Camila Giorgi remains below #70.

Singles – First Round: (Q) Valeria Savinykh def. Mandy Minella 7-6(7-4) 6-1

Mandy Minella will likely be between #75 and #80.

Singles – First Round: (Q) Vesna Dolonc def. (WC) Olivia Rogowska 5-7 7-5 8-6

Olivia Rogowska remains below #100.

Singles – First Round: Zheng Jie def. (WC) Yuxuan Zhang 6-1 3-6 6-4

Not a good start, considering that Zheng Jie needs two more wins to defend her points. Should she lose her next match, she’ll probably end up below #45.
