This event has six slots for qualifiers, rather than the usual four, but only two of the top six seeds made the qualifying final. And even they lost in the final. Galina Voskoboeva topped #2 Sofia Arvidsson in two tiebreaks (which probably means no Top Forty spot for Arvidsson), and #4 Anna Tatishvili won only three games against Kimiko Date-Krumm. #8 Marina Erakovic also won only three games, falling to Ayumi Morita 6-3 6-0.

That means that only one of the twelve qualifying seeds made the main draw, and even that was rather close. #11 Svetlana Kuznetsova edged Jana Cepelova 5-7 6-0 6-2.

The other qualifiers are Karolina Pliskova and Madison Keys.

Singles – First Round: Dominika Cibulkova def. (5) Petra Kvitova 6-1 6-1

Petra Kvitova, it seems, is sick again. She said she wasn’t feeling well. Throw in the heat, and she ended up with ice bags around her body and, by the way she played, a sheet anchor around her neck. This obviously will leave her stuck at #8.

Singles – First Round: (7) Caroline Wozniacki def. Urszula Radwanska 6-1 6-2

This won’t earn Caroline Wozniacki any points, but it’s a solid win against a fairly tough opponent. Considering how bad Wozniacki looked last week, we’d call this an important victory.

Singles – First Round: Maria Kirilenko def. Olivia Rogowska 7-5 6-2

A result like this is hardly a surprise when a low-ranked wildcard takes a spot in a tournament this strong….

Singles – First Round: Ekaterina Makarova def. Varvara Lepchenko 6-4 4-6 6-1

A very tough first round draw — these two came in ranked just a few places apart. As they showed. This presumably means that Varvara Lepchenko will remain just below the Top Twenty.

Doubles – First Round: (1) Errani/Vinci def. Grandin/Uhlirova 6-2 6-1

After a disappointing show last week, it looks as if Errani/Vinci are getting on track.

Doubles – First Round: Jurak/Marosi def. Myers/Sanders 2-6 6-4 10-4
