Sydney brings in top women and two top 10 men The Apia International Sydney will once again offer a standout women’s field and despite having to go up against a high profile exhibition in Melbourne the same week, week, has also drawn an improved men’s field.

 

Wimbledon finalist Agnieszka Radwanska leads the women’s field, which also includes top-10ers Angelique Kerber, Li Na, Sara Errani, Petra Kvitova, Caroline Wozniacki and Sam Stosur.

 

Stosur just won the 2012 Newcombe Medal, and is the first Australian woman since Wendy Turnbull to finish in the world top 10 three years running.

 

“Receiving the Newcombe Medal for the third time is a great honor and it provides great motivation heading into the next few weeks of training as I prepare to face a tough field of top 10 players in Sydney,” Stosur said.

 

Other notable women include Dominika Cibulkova. Jelena Jankovic, Nadia Petrova, Maria Kirilenko, Lucie Safarova and Julia Goerges.

 

The men’s draw boasts two top 10 players in Frenchmen Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet.

 

Other additions to the field include John Isner, Fernando Verdasco, Kevin Anderson, Gilles Simon, Jeremy Chardy , 2012 finalist Julien Benneteau, reigning champion Jarkko Nieminen, Czech Davis Cup hero Radek Stepanek and Australian Marinko Matosevic.

 

“I am excited and proud to be a direct entry into the Sydney event in January,” Matosevic said. “The tournament always attracts a really strong field and this time is no different with players like Tsonga and Gasquet competing in Sydney. I’m looking forward to competing well there and trying to get as many matches under my belt before the Australian Open.”
