Moscow

Singles – First Round: A Bogomolov Jr. def. (5) N Davydenko 7-5 6-4

Yet another sour result for Nikolay Davydenko, who was defending semifinalist points and will fall out of the Top Forty.

Singles – First Round: (7) C Berlocq def. (WC) A Kuznetsov 1-6 6-4 6-3

The rankings say that this was the expected outcome, but we’d consider it a surprise, given how well Kuznetsov has been playing.

Singles – First Round: (Q) K Kravchuk def. (Q) E Korolev 6-4 6-3

These guys are both ranked around #250, so just qualifying was a fairly good result. To face another qualifier and win is a big, big bonus for Konstantin Kravchuk, who will rise a couple of dozen spots.

Singles – First Round: I Sijsling def. (Q) M Berrer 7-6(9-7) 6-3

Michael Berrer remains stuck below the Top Hundred.

Doubles – First Round: (1) Cermak/Mertinak def. (WC) Gabashvili/Kuznetsov 6-3 6-1

Doubles – First Round: Bolelli/Bracciali def. (2) Elgin/Istomin 7-6(7-5) 6-4

As you can probably tell, this is an extremely weak doubles draw. Often that means that the seeds do very well. Not this week, as this result and the next show.

Doubles – First Round: (WC) Donskoy/Kunitsyn def. (4) Junaid/R Ram 7-6(11-9) 6-3

Doubles – First Round: Karlovic/Moser def. Cerretani/Hanescu 6-4 6-7(4-7) 10-8 (Match TB)

Doubles – First Round: Bautista-Agut/Sijsling def. Becker/Phau 7-6(8-6) 7-5

Doubles – First Round: Bellucci/Ito def. Gimeno-Traver Rosol 7-6(7-5) 6-3

Doubles – First Round: Cipolla/Seppi def. Jaziri/Roger-Vasselin 6-4 6-3

Stockholm

Singles – First Round: (5) F Lopez def. P Mathieu 7-6(7-5) 6-7(4-7) 6-2

Paul-Henri Mathieu just made it back into the Top Hundred, but after this two and three-quarter hour marathon, he may be out again. Feliciano Lopez needs two more wins to do anything for his ranking.

Singles – First Round: (7) M Baghdatis def. D Goffin 6-4 6-2

This by itself doesn’t count for Marcos Baghdatis, but the next win will — and he’s already at #33. He is looking more and more as if he might earn an Australian Open seed.

Singles – First Round: G Soeda def. (Q) M Teixeira 6-3 3-6 6-3

If Go Soeda stays this lucky in his draws, he might yet make the Top Fifty this year.

Singles – First Round: S Stakhovsky def. (Q) Y Mertens 6-3 6-4

Sergiy Stakhovsky breaks a three-match losing streak. Yannick Mertens at least managed to reach his first ATP main draw since Marseille 2010.

Singles – First Round: R Berankis def. A Ramos 4-6 6-4 6-1

Albert Ramos remains stuck below #45. He has completely failed to follow up on what had been a great spring.

Singles – First Round: A Falla def. J Hajek 6-3 3-6 7-6(9-7)

Jan Hajek now has a five match losing streak going all the way back to Gstaad.

Singles – First Round: (WC) L Hewitt def. K Anderson 6-4 4-6 6-4

After a rather weak result last week, Lleyton Hewitt looks much better this week. Maybe the court is faster. Kevin Anderson remains below #35.

Singles – First Round: (Q) M Copil def. (Q) F Delbonis 6-1 7-5

Marius Copil has now won his opener at three events in a row. If he could only find a way to win a second round, he might really start moving.

Singles – First Round: J Zopp def. P Andujar 6-4 6-4

There is just a chance Pablo Andujar will make the Top Forty despite this loss, but a win would obviously have made it easier.

Singles – First Round: (WC) P Rosenholm def. G Monfils 6-3 1-6 6-3

If there is any question about how badly damaged Gael Monfils is, this proves it. He lost in 78 minutes to an opponent ranked below #400 with no ATP experience. And Monfils was defending champion’s points. He is going to fall far, far below the Top Fifty.

Vienna

Singles – First Round: P Lorenzi def. (7) B Paire 6-4 6-4

Benoit Paire managed to make it back into the Top Fifty, but this means he won’t go any higher than his current #46.

Singles – First Round: (Q) G Zemlja def. (8) X Malisse 4-6 6-1 7-6(8-6)

Xavier Malisse came in ranked below #50, so maybe this isn’t a huge upset.

Singles – First Round: (Q) D Brands def. (Q) R Bemelmans 6-7(5-7) 6-4 6-3

That’s the first opening-round loss for Ruben Bemelmans since Newport. Of course, he had only one other event in that time…. But it’s also his first ATP loss to an opponent ranked below #50 since he lost to Matosevic at Indian Wells.

Singles – First Round: (Q) V Pospisil def. (WC) A Haider-Maurer 3-6 7-6(7-3) 6-1

Somehow, Andreas Haider-Maurer managed to make it into the Top Hundred this week. But there is just a chance he could lose that spot after this. Possibly even to Vasek Pospisil.

Singles – First Round: M Ebden def. F Volandri 7-5 0-6 6-0

Matthew Ebden’s ranking just took a tremendous fall, but facing Filippo Volandri indoors can bring almost anyone back to life. Not sure what happened in that second set — maybe someone hypnotized Volandri into thinking he was on clay, then it wore off.

Singles – First Round: J Levine def. L Kubot 6-3 6-4

This is turning into a decent autumn for Jesse Levine — he made the quarterfinal at Metz, now this.

Singles – First Round: A Bedene def. G Garcia-Lopez 6-4 1-0 retired (Groin)

Aljaz Bedene has established a strange pattern: He has won his opener at every other event he has played. Now he just has to win a second match at one of these events.

Doubles – First Round: (1) Melzer/Peya def. Kohlmann/Norman 7-6(7-3) 6-4

Doubles – First Round: J Murray/Sa def. Lacko/Zelenay 7-5 6-3

Doubles – First Round: Haase/Levine def. Malisse/Muller 7-6(7-2) 6-3 .
