Novak Djokovic refused to be disconsolate after losing his US Open title to Andy Murray and insisted his aim for the remainder of 2012 is to reclaim the world no.1 ranking he lost to Roger Federer after Wimbledon.

Djokovic remains comfortably in the no.2 slot with Murray moving up to third position above the injured Rafael Nadal. But the Serb, who currently only holds one major title after bidding to win all four concurrently at the French Open said: “Being no.1 of the world this year, end of this year is one of the objectives,”

“I’m going to try to recover from this and move on. Any loss is a bad loss. There is no question about it. I’m disappointed to lose the match, but in the back of my mind I knew that I gave it all. I really, really tried to fight my way back through.”

Djokovic and Murray were born just a week apart and the 25 year-old duo have been playing each other since they were 12 years of age so there is no animosity after the defeat.

“I had a great opponent today,” said Djokovic. “He deserved to win this Grand Slam title more than anybody because over the years he’s been a top player. He’s been so close; lost four finals. Now he has won it, so I would like to congratulate him.”

Djokovic appeared to be troubled with a groin injury in the closing stages of the match and demanded a medical time out just before Murray stepped up to serve the final game. The gusty winds that buffeted the court on Arthur Ashe Stadium also seemed to cause more problems for Djokovic than Murray.

But the finalist said: “You know, that’s sport. You know, you are lucky; the opponent is lucky. You can’t affect that. You try always to fight and give your best. The fifth set was decided in first couple of games.”
