Rafael Nadal, absent from the current US Open and unable to represent Spain in the upcoming Davis Cup semi-final against the United States, has been reassured by his doctor Angel Ruiz-Cotorro that he doesn’t require surgery on the knee problems that have left him sidelined since Wimbledon.

The world no.3 has been rendered non-competitive since losing to Lukas Rosol on June 28 and after initial prognosis that the problem was tendonitis, Ruiz-Cotorro confirmed the issue was a torn tendon in is left knee.

Now the healing process is well under way and speaking in Barcelona , Ruiz-Cotorro reported: “We have completely ruled out surgery. During the next month we’ll be doing training with a lot of physiotherapy combined with hydrotherapy and laser and we’ll see how he progresses.

“We believe that within two months the tendon will be in what we consider a normal state. In a month’s time, if the tests and his progress are positive, he can get back to work on the court.”

According to Ruiz-Cotorro, the aim is not to get Nadal back on the match court as soon as possible but to ensure the troublesome tendon recovers full strength.

“He wants to play when he is in perfect shape, and not take part in a tournament and then stop,” said Angel Ruiz-Cotorro, who is employed by the Real Federacion Espanola de Tennis (RFET) or Spanish Tennis Federation. “He is swimming, cycling, doing physiotherapy, doing the things he has to do.”

The former world number one has needed repeated injury lay-offs over the past few years to rest his knees, which take much of the strain that comes from his highly physical style of play. There have been repeated fears expressed that the rest of his career could be jeopardized if the knee problems get any worse.

However Ruiz-Cotorro insisted: “This injury won’t necessarily drag on. When they tell you that you can’t play such important tournaments you are never pleased but now he is keen to recover and return as soon as possible.”
