Canadian Open

Singles – Second Round: (9) Marion Bartoli def. Peng Shuai 6-1 6-3

A severe blow to Peng Shuai’s U. S. Open seeding hopes. She will be around #33 after this.

Singles – Second Round: Roberta Vinci def. (11) Ana Ivanovic 6-0 6-0

Ana Ivanovic looked really, really bad here — she couldn’t get the ball in the court. She loses any chance for a Top Ten spot; she may lose her #12 ranking.

Ivanovic later called it the worst match of her pro career.

Singles – Second Round: (WC) Aleksandra Wozniak def. (13) Jelena Jankovic 6-2 6-3

Jelena Jankovic called the trainer late in this match. There was a rain delay, too. None of it made any difference. Jankovic can pretty well abandon any hopes of a Top 16 U. S. Open seed (barring withdrawals); Aleksandra Wozniak is now just one win from the Top Fifty.

Singles – Second Round: Carla Suarez Navarro def. (15) Sabine Lisicki 3-6 6-3 6-4

Hard to believe, on hardcourt. Carla Suarez Navarro still hasn’t quite made the Top Forty, but she’s close.

Doubles – Second Round: (1) Huber/Raymond def. Dushevina/Tanasugarn 6-1 6-3

A good sign, given Liezel Huber’s Olympic troubles.

One of the scores in yesterday’s edition was listed backward. In Flavia Pennetta’s loss to Chanelle Scheepers, Pennetta was leading 4-1 when her wrist injury forced her to retire.
