Final Facts

– Williams wins her first Olympic gold medal in singles, becoming the second player to complete the Career Golden Grand Slam; the other was Steffi Graf, a gold medalist at Seoul in 1988.

– Williams wins the 44th title of her career, passing her sister, Venus, for most among active players and now a standalone No.10 all-time.

– Williams’ win-loss record in finals now stands at 44-15, and 6-2 in grass court finals.

– Williams dropped just 17 games en route to the gold medal, the fewest conceded by a champion since tennis was reintroduced as an Olympic sport in 1988.

– Sharapova wins her first Olympic medal on her Games debut.

– Sharapova becomes the fourth Russian to win an Olympic medal; the other three are Elena Dementieva (silver, 2000 and gold, 2008), Dinara Safina (silver, 2008) and Vera Zvonareva (bronze, 2008).

– Sharapova falls to 27-17 in singles finals, and 3-4 in grass court finals.

– Victoria Azarenka’s bronze medal was Belarus’ first ever Olympic tennis medal.

Final Quotes

Williams: “I got the gold. I’m just so happy. I don’t know what to do. I’ve never played better. Playing against Maria you have to be at your best. I knew that. She won the French Open, she never loses this year. She’s playing the finals of everything so I knew it was going to be tough.”

Sharapova: “Serena was playing incredibly confident tennis today, particularly considering how windy it was. A silver medal means a lot to me. It’s always disappointing to lose in the final but it’s great to get a medal in my first Olympic Games.”
