Good news / Bad News - Wimbledon after Wimbledon

Good news – for The News. Specifically the 9 o’clock News, the News at Ten; and all regular evening programmes. With Wimbledon finished, normal telly is back. Our favourite soaps, comedies and drama programmes are back on. Bad news – Umm… most of the news is actually bad.

Good news – it’s now possible to hail a taxi up the hill from Wimbledon station without resorting to elbowing an old nun out of the way, or dressing up as an old nun to get sympathy and then getting elbowed out of the way. Bad news – there’s really no reason to do so anymore!

Good news – Rufus the hawk can have a breather from keeping pigeons and other flying rats at bay around the AELTC. Bad news – we’ll all be covered with poo.

Good news – the local pubs aren’t selling silly drinks like “Centre Court Cooler” for £25 a pitcher, thinking we’re all tourists. Bad news – They’re now called “Olympic Cooler” and cost £28 a jug.

Good news – we’ve got our town centre back. Local lads (a few years younger than myself) again have free roam of the streets after dark, they can drink into oblivion and punch each other in the face at 3am. Bad news – Kinda miss the increased Police presence that we get during the fortnight.

Good news – I drove into Wimbledon the other day, went into a car park and had a choice of roughly 25-30 spaces; then I walked into the shopping centre (Also called Centre Court- ho ho!) without being jostled around or trampled in a stampede of tourists eager to buy anything with a Union flag on or the colours purple and green; and not once was I asked to take a photo of a group of people standing in front of a road sign with the word Wimbledon on it. Bad news – they’ll all be back in a few weeks for the Olympics, and it’ll all start up again!
