Wimbledon

Singles – Second Round: (Q) Jana Cepelova def. (26) Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-7(7-9) 7-6(7-5) 6-3

You’d think that the wetter weather, and the slower courts, would have helped Anabel Medina Garrigues in the resumption of this match, but the only obvious effect was to make a long match longer. Medina Garrigues loses her chance to hit the Top 25; Jana Cepelova has now increased her points by almost two-thirds, and although she was defending 84 points, she should rise from #178 to around #130.

Singles – Third Round: (1) Maria Sharapova def. Hsieh Su-Wei 6-1 6-4

Hsieh Su-Wei will end up a little below #55 — which still must exceed her hopes when she started the year. Maria Sharapova pads her margin over Victoria Azarenka very slightly, but almost certainly not enough to matter. The only practical effect is that Agnieszka Radwanska cannot possibly reach #1 by making the Wimbledon final; Radwanska’s only chance is to win Wimbledon, and that’s if Sharapova and Azarenka cooperate.

Singles – Third Round: (3) Agnieszka Radwanska def. Heather Watson 6-0 6-2

Agnieszka Radwanska may not have much chance left for #1, but she is doing a good job of cementing the #3 ranking. Heather Watson at least made it into the Top Hundred, but Anne Keothavong will remain Britain’s #1 for the time being.

Singles – Third Round: (8) Angelique Kerber def. (28) Christina McHale 6-2 6-3

Angelique Kerber really, really looks like she will be #7 next week. Christina McHale will be between #25 and #30.

Singles – Third Round: Kim Clijsters def. (12) Vera Zvonareva 6-3 4-3, retired (respiratory illness)

Sad. Vera Zvonareva was just barely able to come back for Wimbledon, and what happened? Her injuries held up, but she got sick. She cannot rise above her current #12, and Ana Ivanovic needs only one more win to pass her. Kim Clijsters is now up to about #35. Can she do enough in the next few weeks to earn an Olympic seed?

Singles – Third Round: (15) Sabine Lisicki def. Sloane Stephens 7-6(7-5) 1-6 6-2

That’s two straight three-setters for Sabine Lisicki, which is worrisome, but she now needs only one more win to stay Top Twenty.

Singles – Third Round: (17) Maria Kirilenko def. Sorana Cirstea 6-3 6-1

Maria Kirilenko will very likely rise to #16. Sorana Cirstea will be a little below #40.

Singles – Third Round: (Q) Camila Giorgi def. (20) Nadia Petrova 6-3 7-6(8-6)

Nadia Petrova came into this match tired, and she has a certain tendency to self-destruct, but give Camila Giorgi credit; she played very well. This will put her in the Top Hundred. Petrova will not rise above #20, and she could still fall.

Singles – Third Round: (30) Peng Shuai def. Arantxa Rus 6-1 6-2

This helped them get the schedule back on track a bit. Peng Shuai is now just below the Top Thirty; Arantxa Rus is around #65.

Doubles – Second Round: (1) Huber/Raymond def. Dellacqua/Stosur 5-7 6-3 6-4

That’s going to be a big blow to Samantha Stosur’s doubles ranking — although it hardly matters, since she’s already in the Olympics. Interesting that it was her old partner Raymond who beat her.

Doubles – Second Round: (2) Errani/Vinci def. McHale/Paszek 6-1 6-3

One more win and Errani/Vinci clinch the #3 and #4 rankings, and they still have an outside shot at #1.

Doubles – Second Round: Pennetta/Schiavone def. (3) Peschke/Srebotnik 6-3 4-6 6-1

The endless struggles continue for Peschke/Srebotnik. It makes you wonder how much longer they will last as a team. They were last year’s champions, so this will hit hard. From #5 and #6, they will probably fall to around #10/#11. We currently show the Top Ten as follows:

1..(1) HUBER …………. 9485*

1..(1) RAYMOND ……….. 9485*

3..(3) ERRANI ………….7940*

4..(4) VINCI …………. 7940*

5..(7) KIRILENKO ……… 6190*

6..(8) SHVEDOVA ………..6155*

7..(9) KING ……………6080

8..(5) PESCHKE ……….. 5195

9..(6) SREBOTNIK ……… 5195

10.(10) PETROVA ……….. 5180*

Doubles – Second Round: (5) Makarova/Vesnina def. (Q) Jurak/Marosi 7-5 6-4

Elena Vesnina still has a lot of defending to do, but this will probably suffice to keep Ekaterina Makarova Top Twenty.

Doubles – Second Round: Govortsova/Minella def. (8) Benesova/Zahlavova Strycova 7-5 7-5

This really has been a disappointing year for the Czech team; a post-Olympic break-up still feels like a possibility. It appears they will remain below the Top Twenty.

Doubles – Second Round: (9) Llagostera Vives/Martinez Sanchez def. Klepac/Rodionova 6-3 6-2

Doubles – Second Round: (10) Kops-Jones/Spears def. Dekmeijere/Lepchenko 6-3 7-6(7-4)

Doubles – Second Round: (11) Grandin/Uhlirova def. Domingues Lino/Suarez Navarro 6-2 4-6 6-4

Doubles – Second Round: (13) Mattek-Sands/Mirza def. Foretz Gacon/Mladenovic 6-3 6-2

Sania Mirza needs at least one more win, and probably two, to stay Top Fifteen.

Doubles – Second Round: Erakovic/Tanasugarn def. Jans-Ignacik/Rosolska 7-6(7-4) 6-3

Doubles – Second Round: Groenefeld/Martic def. (Q) Lucic/Savinykh 7-6(7-1) 3-6 6-1

Doubles – Second Round: Peer/Erlich def. Mattek-Sands/Tecau 7-5 6-1

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Makarova/Knowles def. Niculescu/Farah 4-6 6-2 6-1

Mixed Doubles – First Round: South/Skupski def. Lepchenko/Butorac 7-6(7-5) 7-6(8-6)

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Peer/Erlich def. Mattek-Sands/Tecau 7-5 6-1

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Gajdosova/Soares def. Kops-Jones/Huey 6-7(13-15) 6-4 6-4

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Kerber/Petzschner def. Uhlirova/Moser 6-2 6-3

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Azarenka/Mirnyi def. Arvidsson/Lindstedt 7-6(13-11) 6-4

Victoria Azarenka hardly plays doubles any more, so her ranking is poor and she and Mirnyi were unseeded — but they surely are worthy of a seed.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Watson/Hutchins def. Hantuchova/Polasek 6-4 6-3
