Wimbledon

Singles – Second Round: (1) Maria Sharapova def. Tsvetana Pironkova 7-6(7-3) 6-7(3-7) 6-0

Maybe it’s just as well for Maria Sharapova that this marathon took place over two days…. Still, she gives herself a little more cushion over Victoria Azarenka in the contest for #1. Tsvetana Pironkova, a quarterfinalist last year, will fall well below #50.

Singles – Second Round: (2) Victoria Azarenka def. Romina Oprandi 6-2 6-0

Sharapova leads in the contest for #1, but Victoria Azarenka clearly won’t let her rest easily!

Singles – Second Round: (4) Petra Kvitova def. Elena

Baltacha 6-0 6-4

Another good result for Petra Kvitova, but she is still a mere #6 in safe points. Elena Baltacha will remain somewhere around #100.

Singles – Second Round: (6) Serena Williams def. (Q) Melinda Czink 6-1 6-4

Another step toward the Top Five for Serena Williams.

Singles – Second Round: (8) Angelique Kerber def. Ekaterina Makarova 7-5 6-3

Angelique Kerber remains the best bet to be #7 after this week, although it isn’t certain. She might have a shot at #6, given the way Petra Kvitova is struggling.

Singles – Second Round: Mirjana Lucic def. (9) Marion

Bartoli 6-4 6-3

Marion Bartoli didn’t have any strapping on her legs, so presumably her injury wasn’t too bad — although she did ice her leg a bit. But the biggest problem was the lasers Mirjana Lucic was hitting. Most of which, for once, were staying in. Bartoli looked very stubborn, but she couldn’t quite keep up. Lucic screamed with joy when she won -understandable, since she will be rising to around #100. But Bartoli, who made the quarterfinal last year, loses enough points that she will fall to no better than #10. (Good news, indirectly, for Caroline Wozniacki, who now appears sure to be no worse than #9.) There seems to be an odd jinx on odd seeds here. In the Top Fifteen, we’ve lost #5, #7. #9, #11, and #13. Every even-numbered seed is through. Below that, we’ve lost #16 and #32, but still, the number of odd seeds eliminated is much higher.

Singles – Second Round: (10) Sara Errani def. Anne

Keothavong 6-1 6-1

A significant boost to Sara Errani’s hopes of staying Top Ten — in light of the preceding result, she appears in practice to be a lock. Anne Keothavong is likely to remain Britain’s #1 player, but this means she will have to wait to see how Heather Watson does.

Singles – Second Round: (14) Ana Ivanovic def. Kateryna

Bondarenko 6-3 7-6(7-3)

Kateryna Bondarenko loses a pile of points — but she’s lucky in where she was in the rankings. #66 coming in, she will probably end up around #70.

Singles – Second Round: (20) Nadia Petrova def. Timea Babos 6-4 6-7(3-7) 9-7

Nadia Petrova has to be exhausted, but at least she doesn’t have a glass ceiling, and Timea Babos does. Babos will remain between #65 and #70.

Singles – Second Round: (21) Roberta Vinci def. Marina

Erakovic 6-4 6-3

Marina Erakovic will remain just above #50. Roberta Vinci still needs more to assure her Top Thirty spot.

Singles – Second Round: (22) Julia Goerges def. Anastasiya Yakimova 7-6(7-3) 6-2

Julia Goerges defends her points, keeping her in the hunt for a Top Twenty spot. She needs more than this, though.

Singles – Second Round: (24) Francesca Schiavone def. (Q) Kristyna Pliskova 6-4 6-4 maybe Francesca Schiavone really has come out of her funk. Finally. It’s just possible this will put her in the Top 25.

Singles – Second Round: (25) Zheng Jie def. Aleksandra

Wozniak 6-4 6-2

Alexandra Wozniak still has a chance at the Top Fifty, but she will need to have several others lose fairly soon.

Singles – Second Round: (28) Christina McHale def. Mathilde Johansson 7-5 7-5

Christina McHale’s Top Thirty spot now looks effectively

certain.

Singles – Second Round: Varvara Lepchenko def. (31)

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-6(7-4) 6-4

Varvara Lepchenko is still below the Top Forty, but she is getting close. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will probably stay near the bottom of the Top Thirty.

Singles – Second Round: Klara Zakopalova def. Olga

Govortsova 2-6 6-1 6-2

Klara Zakopalova, in the dim and misty past, was a pretty good grass player. It looks as if she has finally

rediscovered that. She is still below the Top Thirty, but one more win would likely put her in.

Singles – Second Round: Yanina Wickmayer def. Galina Voskoboeva 4-6 6-3 8-6

We talked, in the first round, about how Yanina Wickmayer and her opponent Svetlana Kuznetsova were playing to see who would be ranked higher. With this, we can formally say that it will be Wickmayer; she is #35 in safe points, Kuznetsova #36. Galina Voskoboeva ends up just below #50.

Singles – Second Round: Tamira Paszek def. Alize Cornet 6-2 6-1

Tamira Paszek wins her seventh straight grass match. She

still needs two more wins to defend her points, but we would guess that this will keep her Top Fifty.

Singles – Second Round: (WC) Yaroslava Shvedova def. Kiki Bertens 6-4 6-4

Yaroslava Shvedova is now just below #55. One more win and

she will return to the Top Fifty.

Doubles – First Round: (1) Huber/Raymond def. Cadantu/S

Zheng 7-5 6-0

This isn’t even close to enough points to count for Huber/Raymond, but it appears to mean that they’re healthy, and that is pretty important.

Doubles – First Round: (2) Errani/Vinci def. Birnerova/Cetkovska 6-2 6-1

But Huber/Raymond can’t rest on their laurels yet, because the best team of 2012 is definitely still on their tails.

Doubles – First Round: (3) Peschke/Srebotnik def. (WC)

Broady/Konta 6-2 6-4

A good start to Peschke and Srebotnik’s quest to stay Top Ten.

Doubles – First Round: (5) Makarova/Vesnina def.

Daniilidou/Rus 6-3 6-2

Elena Vesnina needs a lot more to get back to the Top Ten, but she is off to a solid start.

Doubles – First Round: (6) Hlavackova/Hradecka def. Date-Krumm/Fujiwara 6-4 6-3

Doubles – First Round: (8) Benesova/Zahlavova Strycova def. King/Schnack 6-4 6-1

Poor Vania King was “orphaned” when Yaroslava Shvedova went off to play with Galina Voskoboeva. And she pays for it. She is likely to stay Top Ten, but she certainly won’t be making the Top Five. We currently estimate the Top Ten as follows:

1..(1) HUBER …………. 9485*

1..(1) RAYMOND ……….. 9485*

3..(3) ERRANI ………….7940*

4..(4) VINCI …………. 7940*

5..(7) KIRILENKO ……… 6190*

6..(8) SHVEDOVA ………..6155*

7..(9) KING ……………6080

8..(5) PESCHKE ……….. 5195*

9..(6) SREBOTNIK ……… 5195*

10.(10) PETROVA ……….. 5180*

Doubles – First Round: (9) Llagostera Vives/Martinez Sanchez def. Chan/Chan 6-4 6-4

Five straight wins for the Spaniards. They really do appear to be Olympic threats.

Doubles – First Round: (10) Kops-Jones/Spears def.

Bratchikova/Tatishvili 6-3 6-4

Doubles – First Round: Falconi/Scheepers def. (14) Dulko/Suarez 3-6 6-2 6-4

Paola Suarez always seemed to hate grass with a passion, but this is still pretty shocking. Makes you wonder if she

realized the Olympics would be played on the stuff….

Doubles – First Round: Groenefeld/Martic def. (16)

Chuang/Dushevina 6-4 6-4

Doubles – First Round: Dellacqua/Stosur def. Cirstea/Morita 6-3 6-2

Much better for Samantha Stosur than in singles. Which is important, given how much she has to defend!

Doubles – First Round: Erakovic/Tanasugarn def. Peng/J Zheng 6-2 6-2

Maybe Tamarine Tanasugarn isn’t entirely used up after all. That’s a pretty good win — and a blow to China’s Olympic chances.

Doubles – First Round: Cibulkova/Hantuchova def.

Barthel/Kerber 6-0 6-1

Doubles – First Round: Hsieh/Lisicki def. Robson/Watson 6-3 7-6(7-4)

Doubles – First Round: Foretz Gacon/Mladenovic def.

Jankovic/Razzano 6-3 5-7 8-6

Doubles – First Round: (Q) Jurak/Marosi def.

Voracova/Zakopalova 6-3 7-5

Doubles – First Round: Williams/Williams def. Dolonc/Savchuk 6-0 6-3

An encouraging — and interesting — result for the Williams Sisters. This is frankly a much better score than we would have expected given Venus’s singles result. Although they weren’t facing much opposition.

Doubles – First Round: Radwanska/Radwanska def.

Peer/Wickmayer 6-2 6-3

The Radwanska sisters very rarely play together, so this is an intriguing result with possible Olympic implications.

Doubles – First Round: Klepac/Rodionova def. Craybas/Goerges 6-4 3-6 6-3

Doubles – First Round: McHale/Paszek def. Cornet/Parmentier 6-4 6-3

Doubles – First Round: Govortsova/Minella def.

Husarova/Pervak 6-2 6-3

Doubles – First Round: Barrois/Diatchenko def.

Amanmuradova/K Bondarenko 7-6(7-2) 6-3

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Robson/Inglot def.

Grandin/Lipsky 7-6(7-2) 6-4

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Kudryavtseva/Hanley def.

Keothavong/Marray 6-4 6-4
