Eastbourne

Singles – Second Round: (4) Marion Bartoli def. Aleksandra Wozniak 6-2 6-2

Marion Bartoli is, of course, the top seed remaining, and it looks as if she intends to enjoy that! However, it is no longer possible for her to rise above #9 here.

Singles – Second Round: (5) Angelique Kerber def. Chanelle Scheepers 6-3 6-2

You can read about this win in today’s Feature. We will simply note that this win lets Angelique Kerber clinch the #8 ranking. Chanelle Scheepers remains just below the Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: (7) Lucie Safarova def. (WC) Heather Watson 7-6(7-5) 6-1

Two more wins and Lucie Safarova hits the Top Twenty. It looks as if Heather Watson will fall just short of the Top Hundred.

Singles – Second Round: Tamira Paszek def. (8) Daniela Hantuchova 6-4 3-6 6-1

Daniela Hantuchova is making progress in her comeback, but it is slow progress. She will probably stay Top Thirty, but with a very thin margin. One more win would put Tamira Paszek in the Top Fifty.

Singles – Second Round: Klara Zakopalova def. (9) Petra Cetkovska 6-1 1-6 6-2

This may well cost Petra Cetkovska her Top 25 spot. Now that it’s just too late to earn a Wimbledon seed, Klara Zakopalova rises above #35.

Singles – Second Round: Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova def. Christina McHale 7-5 3-6 6-4

This was a contest for the last Top Thirty spot. Having lost, Christina McHale will fall to #31 or lower.

Singles – Second Round: Tsvetana Pironkova def. (Q) Stephanie Dubois 6-0 4-6 6-4

More proof that grass is Tsvetana Pironkova’s favorite surface: She actually won a second round match on it. That will take her to probably #37.

Singles – Second Round: Ekaterina Makarova def. (Q) Laura Robson 6-4 7-5

Ekaterina Makarova will rise above #45. Laura Robson should hit the Top Hundred, although by a very small margin.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Peschke/Srebotnik def. Jans-Ignacik/Rosolska 6-1 6-4

Jans-Ignacik/Rosolska had a first round walkover, so they earn no points.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Llagostera Vives/Martinez Sanchez def. Grandin/Uhlirova 6-4 6-4

Given how strong the Spanish Reunion is proving, they just might make things quite interesting at the Olympics.

‘s-Hertogenbosch

Singles – Second Round: (6) Roberta Vinci def. Monica Niculescu 6-3 6-7(4-7) 6-0

Monica Niculescu loses her chance for a return to the Top Thirty.

Singles – Second Round: Francesca Schiavone def. Irina-Camelia Begu 6-2 2-6 7-6(10-8)

No particular points yet for Francesca Schiavone, but it produces an intriguing situation: She faces Kim Clijsters next. On a surface neither of them likes much. But the really odd part is that these two past Slam champions are both unseeded at an International event!

Singles – Second Round: (Q) Kirsten Flipkens def. (Q) Daria Gavrilova 7-5 7-6(7-4)

Kirsten Flipkens came in at #262, and should rise more than fifty places.

Singles – Second Round: Sofia Arvidsson def. (WC) Arantxa Rus 6-4 6-1

Sofia Arvidsson is starting to add points, but it appears she will need one more win to move in the rankings.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Kirilenko/Petrova def. Govortsova/Minella 7-5 6-1

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Pennetta/Schiavone def. (4) Begu/Niculescu 6-4 5-7 10-3 (Match TB)

Doubles – Semifinal: (1) Errani/Vinci def. Cibulkova/Zahlavova Strycova 3-6 6-3 10-6 (Match TB)

And the best team of 2012 so far marches on….
