Birmingham

Singles – First Round: (13) Hsieh Su-Wei def. (Q) Vera Dushevina 4-6 7-6(7-5) 6-4

Not much to say except, “How not to start a long day off right….”

Singles – First Round: (14) Timea Babos def. (Q) Alison Riske 6-4 4-6 7-6(7-2)

Alison Riske seems to like grass a lot, but she is one of those players who can’t seem to finish things off.

Singles – First Round: (15) Elena Baltacha def. Chang Kai-Chen 4-6 6-4 7-5

This put six British players (Keothavong, Baltacha, Watson, Robson, South, and Moore) in the second round — but it meant two matches in one day for Baltacha…..

Singles – First Round: Alexandra Panova def. Stephanie Dubois 6-7(2-7) 6-1 7-5

Stephanie Dubois plays a very defensive game. Probably too defensive for grass….

Singles – Second Round: Misaki Doi def. (1/WC) Francesca Schiavone 7-5 6-4

Francesca Schiavone is really a mess right now. Can’t win on clay, can’t win on grass…. She will obviously stay below the Top 25, and a Top 24 Wimbledon seed appears out of reach.

Singles – Second Round: Urszula Radwanska def. (2) Sabine Lisicki 6-3 6-4

Suddenly Urszula Radwanska seems to be channelling sister Agnieszka. This makes it seven straight wins for the “other” Radwanska. Defending champion Sabine Lisicki doesn’t lose any points, because Birmingham 2011 is already off, but she won’t climb either.

Singles – Second Round: Melinda Czink def. (3) Daniela Hantuchova 7-5 7-6(7-5)

Recall that this is Daniela Hantuchova’s first match back. Doubtless she was rusty. She will fall to not much above #30.

Singles – Second Round: (4) Roberta Vinci def. Virginie Razzano 6-3 retired (Right Wrist Injury)

Roberta Vinci is defending a title this week, so she is still in danger of falling significantly. But only one more win would probably earn her the #24 Wimbledon seed; see the Feature. And, of course, she is the top seed left here.

Singles – Second Round: (5/WC) Jelena Jankovic def. (WC) Melanie South 6-1 7-6(7-3)

And so the culling of British players begins…. It’s not yet enough points to matter to Jelena Jankovic, of course.

Singles – Second Round: Andrea Hlavackova def. (6) Mona Barthel 7-6(7-5) 6-2

Mona Barthel really does seem to have hit a glass ceiling. She will not rise above her current #36, and she loses her shot at a Wimbledon seed.

Singles – Second Round: Elena Vesnina def. (7) Christina McHale 6-1 1-6 7-5

We know that Elena Vesnina has the game to threaten pretty good players, on the rare occasions she actually plays her best, but this is still rather surprising. At least Christina McHale’s Wimbledon seed is safe. But she loses her chance for the Top 24.

Singles – Second Round: (8) Ekaterina Makarova def. (LL) Sesil Karatantcheva 7-6(7-4) 6-3

This should keep Ekaterina Makarova around #55.

Singles – Second Round: (9) Marina Erakovic def. Laura Robson 6-4 3-6 6-4

Out goes British player #2. Marina Erakovic should rise above #45 if she wins her next match.

Singles – Second Round: (13) Hsieh Su-Wei def. Alexandra Panova 6-4 6-2

Hsieh Su-Wei was lucky: Her opponent also had to play two matches in one day. The interesting thing will be to see how Hsieh holds up on Thursday.

Singles – Second Round: Heather Watson def. (15) Elena Baltacha 7-6(7-5) 6-3

A rested young player against a tired older one… hardly a surprise, but another blow to the British ranks.

Singles – Second Round: Irina Falconi def. (14) Timea Babos 6-0 6-4

The main explanation for this is probably just that Timea Babos was playing her second match of the day.

Singles – Second Round: Casey Dellacqua def. (WC) Tara Moore 4-6 6-4 6-1

And out goes another British player. One more win would likely put Casey Dellacqua is back in the Top Hundred.

Singles – Second Round: Stephanie Foretz Gacon def. Anastasia Rodionova 7-5 6-2

Stephanie Foretz Gacon will probably rise to #75 or higher.

Singles – Second Round: (Q) Zheng Jie def. Anne Keothavong 6-3 6-4

Zheng Jie should have been seeded here. With this, she takes over the spot of the #6 seed. She also clinches a Top Thirty spot. Anne Keothavong, however, is the fifth British casualty. Only Heather Watson managed to reach the third round. If Watson can win one more, she’ll be close to the Top Hundred. Keothavong should remain Britain’s #1 for the time being, though.

Singles – Second Round: (Q) Melanie Oudin def. (Q) Michelle Larcher de Brito 6-3 6-4

Melanie Oudin is now up to around #190. It will be tough for her to earn direct U. S. Open entry, but at least she’ll be a respectable wildcard….

Doubles – First Round: Benesova/Kudryavtseva def. (2) Mirza/Shvedova 7-5 6-3

Iveta Benesova lost so tamely in singles that we wondered if she was all right. Guess she was….

Doubles – First Round: (3) Grandin/Uhlirova def. Dekmeijere/Tatishvili 6-3 6-7(6-8) 10-7 (Match TB)

Doubles – First Round: Chan/Chan def. Jans-Ignacik/Rosolska 6-2 6-4

Presumably the Polish pair were reuniting with the Olympics in mind. Not exactly great preparation, this.

Doubles – First Round: Zhang/Zheng def. Cirstea/Keothavong 6-3 6-4

Bad Gastein

Singles – First Round: (3) Ksenia Pervak def. Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino 3-6 6-3 7-6(7-3)

One more win would put Ksenia Pervak into the Top Forty.

Singles – First Round: Yvonne Meusburger def. (5) Petra Martic 6-1 4-6 7-6(7-5)

There will be no Top Forty spot for Petra Martic, though; she is likely to stay #42.

Singles – First Round: (6) Irina-Camelia Begu def. Kathrin Woerle 7-5 1-6 6-3

Not the best sign for Irina-Camelia Begu, considering that she was facing an opponent ranked more than 150 places below her….

Singles – First Round: (8) Johanna Larsson def. (Q) Jana Cepelova 6-4 7-6(7-1)

Jana Cepelova is now 0-2 at the WTA level.

Singles – First Round: Patricia Mayr-Achleitner def. (WC) Nicole Rottmann 6-2 6-3

Patricia Mayr-Achleitner will likely rise above #95.

Singles – First Round: Jill Craybas def. Nina Bratchikova 7-5 6-3

Jill Craybas earns her first WTA win since Charleston, and only her third of the year.

Singles – First Round: (Q) Chichi Scholl def. Zuzana Ondraskova 6-3 6-0

Chichi Scholl makes her WTA debut with a win. Of course, facing an opponent who hasn’t played a WTA match since Wimbledon 2011 helps….

Singles – First Round: (Q) Dia Evtimova def. (WC) Barbara Haas 5-7 6-1 6-3

This is likely to be one of the lowest-combined-ranking matches of the year. A very lucky draw for Evtimova, obviously.

Doubles – First Round: (2) Begu/Minella def. Camerin/Klepac 6-3 6-0

Doubles – First Round: (5) Jurak/Marosi def. Arruabarrena-Vecino/Pous-Tio 6-2 6-1

Doubles – First Round: Lee-Waters/Moulton-Levy def. Beygelzimer/Woerle 6-4 3-6 10-6 (Match TB)

Doubles – First Round: Costas-Moreira/Ferrer Suarez def. Gallovits-Hall/Pervak 7-6(7-1) 6-3
