Roland Garros

Singles – Fourth Round: (2) R Nadal def. (13) J Monaco 6-2 6-0 6-0

Gee, do you think Rafael Nadal wants another title here? He leaves Juan Monaco probably #14.

Singles – Fourth Round: (4) A Murray def. (17) R Gasquet 1-6 6-4 6-1 6-2

Toward the end of the third set Andy Murray grabbed his back — and got booed for it. You probably shouldn’t look injured when you’re winning a

set 6-1 to go up two sets to one…. In any case, the back problem didn’t slow him down. We show Richard Gasquet ending up at #19.

Singles – Fourth Round: (5) J Tsonga def. (18) S Wawrinka 6-4 7-6(8-6) 3-6 3-6 6-4

There wasn’t much to the Monday part of this; Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was already up a break in the fifth set. So they came back and played four more games with no surprises. Stanislas Wawrinka it appears will be #22.

Singles – Fourth Round: (6) D Ferrer def. (20) M Granollers 6-3 6-2 6-0

And so Spain’s #2 player settles the fate of Spain’s #4 player. Assuming everyone plays, the singles players on Spain’s Olympic team will be Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Nicolas Almagro, and Fernando Verdasco. Feliciano Lopez is the first alternate; Marcel Granollers, the new #22, will be the second alternate. He might still get a doubles spot, at least.

With this, all rankings below #12 appear to be set.

Singles – Fourth Round: (9) J del Potro def. (7) T Berdych 7-6(8-6) 1-6 6-3 7-5

Once again Tomas Berdych fails to catch up with David Ferrer. Ferrer will remain #6, Berdych #7. Juan Martin del Potro’s win gives him the chance to gain on Janko Tipsarevic:

Singles – Fourth Round: (12) N Almagro def. (8) J Tipsarevic 6-4 6-4 6-4

Nicolas Almagro’s clay game is excellent. His ability to use it at big events is historically minimal. So this is a very nice win for him. It takes him past Gilles Simon and Mardy Fish to the #11 ranking. If he can somehow make the semifinal, he is Top Ten. As for Janko Tipsarevic, he is still #8 in safe points, but he will lose that spot to Juan Martin del Potro if Del Potro can make the semifinal.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Mirnyi/Nestor def. Ebden/Harrison 6-4 6-4

Still no sign of a resolution in the contest for #1….

Mixed Doubles – Quarterfinal: (7) Mirza/Bhupathi def. (2) Peschke/M Bryan 6-2 6-3

This is one of those matches where we frankly thought Mixed rankings would fail. After all, Mirza/Bhupathi would have been promoted to #5 under Mixed rankings, and Peschke/Bryan demoted to unseeded. But we thought that was because Mike Bryan hasn’t played much Mixed lately. Maybe we need to take those numbers more seriously.

Mixed Doubles – Quarterfinal: Jans-Ignacik/S Gonzalez def. Grandin/Hanley 6-4 3-6 10-5 (Match TB)
