Singles – First Round: (3) Petra Kvitova def. Marina Erakovic 6-2 6-3

Marina Erakovic is hurting, so this doesn’t really say much about Petra Kvitova’s form, but it at least gets her some points. Erakovic, on the other hand, is likely to lose her newly-earned Top Forty spot.

Singles – First Round: (9) Serena Williams def. Elena Vesnina 6-3 6-1

Serena has a very good chance of reaching #8 this week. Especially if she keeps playing this efficiently.

Singles – First Round: (WC) Carla Suarez Navarro def. (15) Jelena Jankovic 4-6 7-6(7-5) 6-4

Jelena Jankovic’s slow, painful fade continues. She was defending Rome semifinal points, so this will drop her to no better than #20. It might be #21, although it’s unlikely to be lower.

Singles – First Round: Lucie Safarova def. Kaia Kanepi 6-4 6-4

So ends Kaia Kanepi’s winning streak. That very likely means no Top 25 spot.

Singles – First Round: Sara Errani def. Chanelle Scheepers 4-6 6-2 6-3

If Kanepi’s winning streak is over, Sara Errani’s continues. This doesn’t quite guarantee that she will stay Top 25, but it’s likely.

Singles – First Round: Ekaterina Makarova def. Galina Voskoboeva 6-2 7-6(7-3)

There will be no Top Forty spot for Galina Voskoboeva just yet; she will probably fall below #45.

Singles – First Round: (Q) Lucie Hradecka def. Peng Shuai 6-4 5-7 6-4

Peng Shuai can forget about returning to the Top Twenty.

Singles – First Round: (Q) Andrea Hlavackova def. (Q) Anastasia Rodionova 6-1 6-4

This puts Andrea Hlavackova very close to the Top Hundred.

Singles – Second Round: (5) Samantha Stosur def. Christina McHale 2-6 6-4 6-0

That’s the second straight severe scare for Samantha Stosur. How many more can she survive? Still, she is making it ever more likely that she will stay #5. Christina McHale will not rise above her current #36, meaning that she has only one more chance to earn a Roland Garros seed.

Singles – Second Round: (8) Li Na def. (WC) Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-3 6-1

Li Na still trails Serena Williams in the contest for #8, but at least she is keeping it close. Silvia Soler-Espinosa moves a little above #60.

Singles – Second Round: (12) Angelique Kerber def. (WC) Venus Williams 6-4 6-1

Venus Williams remains a shadow of her former self, but we’ll still admit to being surprised by this. Angelique Kerber continues to make amazing progress — and, with this, she has done it. She is now Germany’s #1 player, having passed both Andrea Petkovic and Sabine Lisicki. She will very likely be #11 next week. There isn’t much chance she will go higher; she is still more than 400 points below the Top Ten.

Singles – Second Round: Petra Cetkovska def. (Q) Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-4 7-5

Petra Cetkovska became the first player to reach the second round, effectively guaranteeing her Top Thirty spot while she was at it.

Doubles – First Round: Groenefeld/Zhang def. (6) Mirza/Rodionova 6-3 6-2

Sania Mirza continues to struggle since breaking up with Elena Vesnina.

Doubles – First Round: Hsieh/Zheng def. (8) Benesova/Zahlavova Strycova 6-2 1-6 10-6 (Match TB)

Doubles – First Round: Dulko/Suarez def. Klepac/Rosolska 6-2 7-5

Still no seeding for Dulko/Suarez? It can’t take too much longer at this rate….

Doubles – First Round: Erakovic/Niculescu def. Hercog/King walkover (Hercog: Low Back Injury)

Doubles – First Round: Makarova/Vesnina def. Gajdosova/Peng 6-4 7-5

Doubles – First Round: (WC) Cibulkova/Husarova def. Grandin/Uhlirova 6-3 6-7(6-8) 10-7 (Match TB)

Five straight wins for Janette Husarova. She really does seem to have reached a new level.
