The Eton Manor Wheelchair Tennis International, the test event for the London 2012 Paralympic Tennis Event, begins today at Eton Manor, Olympic Park, London. The test event is taking place on 3-6 May 2012.

The London 2012 Paralympic Tennis Event will be held at Eton Manor on 1–8 September. A total of 112 players will compete at the venue for six gold medals, with singles and doubles competitions held in men’s, women’s and quad categories.

This week’s test event will feature all six Paralympic tennis events, with the singles entries headed by three-time women’s gold medallist Esther Vergeer of Netherlands, two-time quad champion Peter Norfolk of Great Britain, and Athens men’s champion Robin Ammerlaan of Netherlands.

A total of 27 players are in action this week, with a strong British entry that also includes men’s No. 2 seed Gordon Reid, women’s No. 2 seed Jordanne Whiley and quad No. 2 seed Andrew Lapthorne.

Eton Manor is the only purpose-built Paralympic venue for London 2012. It features nine competition courts and four practice courts, with a total capacity of 10,500 spectators. There are three show courts, with Centre Court holding 5,000 spectators.

The Eton Manor Wheelchair Tennis International is part of the ‘London Prepares’ series, the official London 2012 sports testing programme. As well as allowing the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) to test vital areas of operation ahead of the 2012 Games, the series has featured world-class sporting events, bringing top athletes to London’s iconic existing venues and brand new venues in the Olympic Park.

The Eton Manor Wheelchair Tennis International is also an ITF 3 category event on the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, offering both world ranking points and prize money for participants.
