Injured Clijsters Out Of Clay Court Season

There will be a major name missing from the draws during the clay court season this spring, as Kim Clijsters has had to pull out of Madrid and Roland Garros – the two events she was entered in – due to a hip injury.
During the warm-up before her third round defeat to Yanina Wickmayer at theSony Ericsson Open in Miami, Clijsters started feeling pain in her right hip, and during the match it only got worse. Diagnoses afterwards showed a torn hip muscle, which has forced the Belgian out of the clay court season.
“I’m really gutted to not be able to prove myself on clay for a last time,” Clijsters said on her website. “But my current physique does not allow to be ready for the French Open. I am looking forward to an extended period of preparing for the unique grass court season of Wimbledon and the Olympics.”
Since returning to professional tennis in 2009, Clijsters has missed three of 10 Grand Slam tournaments – the 2010 French Open (left foot injury), 2011Wimbledon (right ankle injury) and the 2011 US Open (abdominal injury). In the other seven she has compiled a remarkable 33-4 record however, winning titles at the 2009 US Open, 2010 US Open and 2011 Australian Open.
Clijsters’ next tournaments will be on grass, starting with ‘s-Hertogenbosch and then moving to Wimbledon and the Olympics, to be held at Wimbledon.
