Casablanca

Singles – First Round: B Paire def. (5) D Young 4-6 7-6(7-5) 6-2

Donald Young was defending Challenger points this week, so he is going to fall several spots below his current #45. It appears he’ll stay Top Fifty, but perhaps not by much. What with all the points coming off this week, this win is likely to put Benoit Paire in the Top Hundred.

Singles – First Round: G Garcia-Lopez def. (8) F Fognini 6-4 3-6 7-5

A double, or maybe a triple, surprise: Fabio Fognini likes the surface better, he is higher-ranked, and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez has been in poor form. This means no Top Fifty spot for Fognini.

Singles – First Round: I Andreev def. A Montanes 6-3 6-3

A significant upset based on current rankings, especially given how well Albert Montanes likes clay. But it’s worth remembering that Montanes missed both Miami and Indian Wells. Unfortunately, this puts him on a five match losing streak.

Houston

The early news out of Houston was all about injury. The first match to conclude ended in a retirement. And Tommy Haas didn’t even get to take the court; he had to withdraw with a knee injury.

Singles – First Round: (6) C Berlocq def. J Blake 6-4 2-6 6-1

This really was as much of a seesaw as it looked — the third set seemed almost instantaneous. But Carlos Berlocq hardly ever loses first round matches any more. Any additional points he earns here will count, but it appears he needs two more wins to move in the rankings.

Singles – First Round: B Phau def. D Junqueira 6-1 3-0, retired (hip)

This was the very first match of the tournament. Not the best omen….

Singles – First Round: S Querrey def. E Prodon 6-1 6-4

We’ve stopped trying to read omens into Sam Querrey’s results. But he won five-eighths of the points in this match, and more than 80% of the points on serve, and finished in less than an hour. On clay. That would clearly seem to imply that he can still play at a high level. Now he just has to do it every day.

Doubles – First Round: (3) Kohlmann/Waske def. (WC) Kendrick/Sweeting 1-6 6-2 10-7 (Match TB)

Ryan Sweeting was last year’s singles champion here. Those points are off (see the Feature), but this can’t make him feel too good as he prepares to defend….
