Indian Wells, CA – A packed stadium 1 crowd witnessed Roger Federer in one of his many classic performances as he thoroughly dismantled Juan Martin del Potro 6-3 6-2 in one hour and nine minutes. Every aspect of the Roger Federer game was firing on all cylinders. His serve was lethal today, the energy and intensity of the moment allowing him to add even more velocity to his service patterns. Federer saved all three break points he faced and won 80% of his points when he got his first serve in. When he did get a look at a forehand, the whip he would put into his shots made the ball jump off the court and Del Potro was unable to keep up with it. The Federer backhand side, the one that Del Potro was supposed to attack, turned out to be as solid as a rock today. Almost every single backhand slice Federer hit was an inch or two above the net as it knifed into the court, slanting away from Del Potro at the same time. The only thing that did affect Federer were the desert moths that flew around in front of him and caused him to frame a few balls.

If Federer’s game wasn’t a big enough obstacle to overcome by itself, Del Potro found more ways to lose the match by allowing himself to become rattled by an Emirates Line Challenge call. In the first game of the match (which lasted 11 minutes), Roger hit a wide serve on the deuce court. It was called in but Del Potro wanted a look. However the video screen malfunctioned on court and the video images were not shown. Umpire Mohamed Lahyani confirmed via walkie-talkie that the original call of good was correct. Del Potro lost the next point and the next two before settling down a little. He was infuriated and did not stop arguing with Mohamed for the entire first set. It truly got to Del Potro and his game level dropped entirely. What looked like a promising match from the first game was a complete rout in the end.
