Wozniacki opened her title defense against Ekaternia Makarova on Stadium 1 to end the day session here at the BNP Paribas Open. Temperatures in the desert were perfect for play and Wozniacki didn’t disappoint, expertly moving around the court and forcing Makarova corner to corner. Makarova committed many errors but Wozniacki was in good form, saying she felt comfortable out on the court despite it being her first match.

“To be back here really brings back some good memories. It feels like a family tournament because it feels like it’s the same people who come out and watch. I have loads of friends here and, you know, have barbecues and stuff. It just makes it feel more homey.” – C. Wozniacki

Wozniacki also said she had 20-something friends/family in her player box tonight. Hilarity ensued during her post-match press conference as a reporter asked about which tennis player would do well on the PGA or LPGA tour. Mardy Fish had just finished an interview in a separate interview room and walked in. Without a hint of hesitation the ever-smiling Wozniacki said,

“Well, I heard Mardy Fish, you know, has been playing loads of golf, so maybe he could make it to the PGA TOUR. If not PGA, then LPGA. Go for the women’s tees.”

The entire interview room cracked up laughing as Mardy played along with a chuckle. We’ll all be left smiling along with Wozniacki if she can keep up her solid play and successfully defend her title.
