It’s the first week of Lent and Caroline Wozniacki has revealed she has struck a demanding challenge with boyfriend Rory McIlroy. The former tennis no.1 and the man who could end the week the world’s top ranked golfer have agreed to forgo sweets, white bread, fried food, cakes, chocolate and, although the pair rarely drink, alcohol.

The first of the pair that cracks has to buy the other a substantial present and Wozniacki is confident. “I think I’m going to win,” she said. “I’m stubborn, so I’m not going to give up. And let’s just put it this way. I wouldn’t put myself through that just for a pair of sunglasses.”

Wozniacki maintains the toughest thing for her to go without is candy or chocolate while McIlroy, this week playing in the WGC Accenture Match Play at Dove Mountain, Arizona will struggle to not eat potato chips or popcorn.

And there is a degree of trust between the sporting pair who have been dating since July. Wozniacki said: “He’s such a bad liar, so I would tell right away if he had eaten something unhealthy.”

Wozniacki revealed that during her childhood she chose tennis as her main sport over swimming after also showing great potential to compete in the pool. But there was an added incentive from her father Piotr.

She recalled: “I preferred the outdoors and the fun and just having a barbecue after tennis practice and winning prizes. My dad would set up goals for me to win ice cream.”

If Wozniacki retains the Dubai Duty Free Championships title this week she would win more than ice cream; the small matter of $446,778, which is sweet indeed.
