After falling in the first round of Memphis as the defending champion on Wednesday, Andy Roddick has now gone a year a without a title and is ranked No. 27, his lowest mark since 2001.

The former world No. 1 has been ravaged by injuries during the past two years, from shoulder, to hip, to hamstring and to currently an ankle injury.

Roddick not only fell in Memphis, a tournament where he is very comfortable as he’s won it three times, but also fell in the second round of San Jose last week, another event where he has faired well, also winning that title three times.

Roddick – who had to retire against Lleyton Hewitt in Australia — admits that he is frustrated and is unsure whether he should take off time to rehab. But since he has played so sporadically over the past year and half, he wants matches. He does not want this spring hardcourt season to go by without making an impact because he’s had very little success on clay during his career.

“If they tell it’s six to eight weeks (for a full recovery) I hear three weeks,” Roddick said. “It’s a tough thing. You are always at the pressure of the (tour) schedule. Unfortunately if you get hurt, the tour doesn’t stop. . . There’s significant gap from where I am and where I need to be. It would be abnormal if you weren’t frustrated, the question is how to figure your way through it. . . There’s a fine line [between deciding to rehab or play on] and something I don’t know if there’s a perfect answer to. I don’t know if I can tell you if one way or another is right or wrong.”
