Juan Carlos Ferrero played Davis Cup, then hurried here. It may have been a little too much for him. Fortunately, it won’t affect his ranking significantly.
Singles – First Round: (8) A Ramos def. S Giraldo 6-3 6-4
Santiago Giraldo is really in a slump all of a sudden. And if he can’t break his funk on clay, where can he?
Singles – First Round: P Starace def. (Q) P Capdeville 5-7 7-6(9-7) 6-2
Potito Starace was sick last week, and it may have affected him in Davis Cup, but it looks as if he is finally getting over it.
Singles – First Round: J Chardy (Q) def. B Kavcic 6-4 6-4
Jeremy Chardy’s ranking is high enough that he probably could have gotten direct entry here. But we’ve seen hints before that he doesn’t really know how to manage a schedule.
Singles – First Round: D Nalbandian def. B Paire 7-6(7-3) 6-3
David Nalbandian has suffered so many injuries lately that is he ranked not much ahead of Benoit Paire. But he showed in Davis Cup that he still had game; this match may have been slightly less close than the score.
Singles – Second Round: (4) T Bellucci def. R Mello 6-0 1-6 6-3
Thomaz Bellucci adds a few points, but not enough to make any difference — and he obviously had a very tough, and very late, match.
Doubles – First Round: (2) Bracciali/Starace def. Dutra Silva/Sant’anna (WC) 6-4 6-4
Doubles – First Round: (4) Mertinak/Sa def. Gil/Junquiera 6-3 6-0
Doubles – First Round: Chardy/Simon def. Machado/Ramirez Hidalgo 6-4 6-3
