Kim Clijsters has begun testing herself for an Australian Open title defense after six months out of tennis with injury, beating world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in an exhibition in the diamond centre of Antwerp, Belgium.
The Diamond Games was once a regular WTA event held in February, but has been reduced to an exhibition in recent years. The 28-year-old Clijsters defeated the Dane 6-2, 7-6 in what was for the Belgian an important test of her ankle injury.
“After such a long recovery and so much training effort, it is fun to be playing an ‘official’ match,” Clijsters said. “The start of 2011 was really good. But after that I made some decisions (over-playing) I no longer would make now. I’ll be listening to my body much better.”
Clijsters had almost cured a freak ankle injury which she suffered while attending a relative’s spring wedding, but was then hit by an abdominal strain which forced her to miss Wimbledon and the much of the rest of the season. She made an attempt at an August return in Canada but had to give it up to fully recover in her own time.
“I will take things one tournament at a time, but above all I would like to improve my game,” said the mother of one and ex No. 1 who currently stand 13th. “I’ve been working really hard at my service, because that often did not go well in the past year. And there are a few other details I would like to see improve still.”
