FORMER CHAMPION TODD NELSON CAPTURES THIRD-ROUND VICTORY AT LA JOLLA BEACH & TENNIS CLUB  |

La Jolla, Calif. – (November 29, 2011) – Former touring tennis professional Todd Nelson retired from the men’s tennis tour in 1995, but the 50-year-old resident of Valley Center, Calif. showed he still has what it takes to overcome a determined opponent and win a tough match.

On a warm, sunny afternoon on Court No. 8 at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, the ninth-seeded Nelson defeated unseeded Amir Abramov of Melbourne Beach, Fla., 7-6 (5), 6-1 to advance to the fourth round of the USTA National 40 Hard Court Championships.

Nelson, who won the National 40 Hard Court men’s singles title at the LJB&TC in 2001 and 2002, fell behind 5-2 in the first set of his third-round match against the left-handed Abramov. After Nelson held serve to make the score 5-3, Abramov served for the set, but was broken when Nelson hit a perfectly executed forehand passing shot on breakpoint to get back on serve.

The first set eventually went to a tiebreak and as Nelson served at 6-5, he blasted an ace past Abramov to win the tiebreak 7-5. With the momentum clearly in his favor, Nelson broke serve twice and built a 5-0 lead in the second set and went on to close out the match as he hit a forehand winner on match point.

“It felt great to play. I haven’t played tournaments recently. There are some hiccups with smoothing that process out.

Obviously more matches would help to make it easier and get more comfortable,” Nelson said. “I did come to win, so I’m going to try and win. I’m not looking ahead to see who’s doing what against who. I have to take each of the matches as they come.”

Nelson, who currently teaches tennis at a local hotel and works with junior players, turned professional in 1981 and was once ranked as high as 58 in the ATP World Tour singles rankings. During his time on the tour, he played against top players such as Pete Sampras, Patrick Rafter, Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker, Yannick Noah, Jimmy Connors, Pat Cash, John McEnroe and Mats Wilander.

In his fourth-round match, Nelson will face sixth-seeded Warren Fulgenzi of Las Vegas, N.M. at 10:30 a.m. (PT) on Wednesday. In other men’s singles action on Tuesday, top-seeded Jeff Tarango and second-seeded Oren Motevassel both advanced to the fourth-round with straight set victories.

Gretchen Magers, the top-seed in the women’s singles draw, reached the quarterfinals after defeating Nora Harrison of Erie, Colo., 6-1, 6-1 in an early morning second-round match.

The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club enjoys a 75-year tradition of hosting tennis tournaments and tennis pros from around the world. Tennis legends who have played at the LJB&TC include Pancho Gonzales, Jack Kramer, Ted Schroeder, Maureen Connolly, Billie Jean King, Stan Smith, Arthur Ashe, Roscoe Tanner, and John McEnroe.

Named “Club of the Year” for 2011 by the San Diego District Tennis Association, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club is designated one of the “Top 50 Tennis Resorts” by Tennis Resorts Online. In addition to hosting the USTA National Men’s & Women’s 40 & Over Hard Courts, the USTA National Father & Son Hard Court Championships and the Grandfather & Grandson Hard Court Championships, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club is home to the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championships every March (one of the five-oldest tennis events in the world), and the USTA National Senior Women’s Hard Court Tennis Championships in May. The Club also hosted the 2008 Fed Cup, and was also the proud host of the 2006 Davis Cup First Round Tie between the United States and Romania.
