Wow! Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi are no longer the World Doubles No.7. The IndoPak Express is tied for No.6 with Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner. During the quarter finals of the BNP Paribas Masters tournament they rose and overcame the world No. 2 team and second seeds, Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic. The IndoPak Express success came from a 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 win. The match lasted a matter of one hour and twenty-six minutes, becoming their 36th victory of the season.
Winning today paved the way for Bopanna and Qureshi to become Paris semifinalists. Their status as semifinalists is why they are now tied for the world No.6 spot. Today at 11:45 on Center Court, Bopanna and Qureshi clash against the World No. 3 team and third seeds of the tournament Daniel Nestor and Max Mirnyi. Mirnyi and Nestor beat the eighth seeded team of Oliver Marach and Alexander Peya 6-2, 7-6⁷.
Bopanna and Qureshi’s tie for World No.6 is big news and big incentive to make it to the finals. Becoming finalists will ensure the No.6 spot for IndoPak Express, at least through the beginning of Barclays. Being only two matches away from the BNP Paribas Masters 1000 title must be exciting for Bopanna and Qureshi. They made the semifinals in two Maters 1000 tournaments this season, Monte Carlo and Indian Wells. Winning in Paris could lock in the No. 6 spot for Bopanna and Qureshi. The only way Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner will keep and finish as No.6 is to at least make it to the finals at Barclays.
Bopanna and Qureshi face a tough team. Daniel Nestor and Mirnyi didn’t become World No.3 easily. Their win loss ratio is 41-18, compared to Bopanna and Qureshi’s 36-24; its obvious today will be a close game.
Contingent upon Bopanna and Qureshi’s advancement to the finals, they will either battle it out against the teams of Santiago Gonzalez and Christopher Kas or Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut. Gonzalez and Kas will skirmish with Benneteau and Mahut for the BNP Paribas Masters finals in the last match of the day.
On a second look at the South African Airways 2011 YTD point’s rankings, Bopanna and Qureshi might even take the World No.5 spot if they become finalists today. The current No.5 team of Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau are only ahead by a meager 30 points and were knocked out during the second round of the BNP Paribas Masters on Thursday November 10th.
Obviously the future is brighter for Bopanna and Qureshi. I’m sure IndoPak Express will serve aces and rally to the finish, whether that finish be the Paris Finals or Barclays. There is no doubt in my mind that Bopanna and Qureshi will complete the season much better than expected. Remember to watch these two wildcards closely at 11:45 Paris time.
