World No. 4 Roger Federer is through to the quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Masters after a win over Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-2 6-4.

Federer took charge early in the first set with a break and continued on from there with another break and with that he claimed the first set 6-2. The second set saw a few early breaks of serve but it was the Swiss number one who took the lead 4-3 and followed through and won the set and the match after just over one hour.

“I thought him coming back in the second set was something somewhat normal. He had some great shot making there, but unfortunate for me. For me it was the key to stay calm and wait for my chance, and I was able to bounce right back,” Federer said.

Federer’s win over Gasquet yesterday was his 799th career win. Not many players in the Pro era have reached 800 match wins. The 30-year-old is hoping to lift the Paris trophy on Sunday but he said, “Draw are very difficult here and it’s not so simple just to cruise to a final like you think it is,” he said.

Juan Monaco will be Federer’s quarterfinal opponent. Monaco and Mardy Fish were in the third set when the American pulled out with a stomach strain. Fish had match points in the tiebreak in the second set.

Super Serb Novak Djokovic advanced into the Paris quarterfinals on Thursday. The world number one player defeated his fellow countryman Viktor Troicki 4-6 6-3 6-1.

“I’m happy with the way things are going progress and game wise. It’s only my second indoor event after December last year,” Djokovic said. After losing the first set the Serbian came back and levelled the match to one set all. Djokovic was dominating the third set completely and never gave Troicki a chance to challenge him.

Hometown man Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will meet Djokovic in the top half quarterfinal on Friday. Tsonga took out Italian Andreas Seppi 6-3 6-4. Tsonga told the press the other day how much it means to him to play at Bercy. After today’s match he said, “I want to do well because it is in France.” Tsonga has now qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London.

World number five David Ferrer sailed past the No. 14 seed Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3 6-2. Ferrer will take on a huge challenge next facing big serving American John Isner in the quarterfinals. Isner is the number player on the Aces count with 751 aces fired in 52 matches. Isner downed Feliciano Lopez of Spain 6-4 6-2 in the previous round.

It will be high quality tennis when Andy Murray takes on Tomas Berdych in the bottom half quarterfinal on Friday. Murray destroyed Andy Roddick 6-2 6-2 in just one hour. “I started the match well, which against him is always important because he plays his best when he’s ahead,” the British number one said.

Roddick who looks different on court after taking off his ankle straps said, “If I’m not able to get my serve through the court or drive a ball deep to the corner and get rewarded for it, I’m going to struggle most times against Murray,” Roddick said.

Tomas Berdych is the last player to earn a spot at the World Event in London. The World No. 6 won in straight sets against Janko Tipsarevic 7-5 6-4. “It was a kind of really special day, because it was the one that decided if I qualify for London. This is my second season where I’m able to make it , and I’m very extremely happy for it,” the Czech player said.
