Swiss Über Star Roger Federer eased past the number seven seed Andy Roddick 6-3 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Swiss Indoors in Basel on Friday. Federer will face his Davis Cup team mate Stanislas Wawrinka in the semi-final on Saturday.

Fabulous Federer broke Roddick once in the first set to clinch the set 6-3. The second set saw the Swiss number one brake a further two times before winning the match in just over one hour. “We’ve played on so many occasions that sometimes you can’t play your best, and that’s what happened to Andy today. He didn’t have a very good serving day and then once I get a chance to get into all his service games, it’s always going to be difficult for him to find a way,” the former world number one said.

Swiss number two ranked player Stanislas Wawrinka took out Germany’s Florian Mayer 6-2 6-2. Wawrinka has only ever beaten his compatriot Federer once and that was in Monte Carlo in 2009. Federer has been the winner nine times and the last match they played as at this year’s French Open. “This is the first time I’ve played Stan here in Switzerland. Playing back here is particularly special because I come from this town and Stan’s not too far away either. I think it’s a special occasion for Swiss tennis and the Swiss fans,” Federer said.

The World No. 19 said of Friday’s match against Mayer, “I was expecting a very tough match against Florian, he’s a very good player but I think today I played my best match of the week.”

Novak Djokovic was put to the test by Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis in their quarterfinals clash on Friday. Djokovic lost the first set 6-2 but came back and won the next two 6-2 6-3. “A win is a win. It was a close match. I’ve got to give credit to him because he played really well. I know that things will get better for me, I just have to stay patient and work hard,” the world number one said.

The top seeded Serbian will meet with Japanese wildcard Kei Nishikori in the top half semi-final. Nishikori defeated lucky loser Mikhail Kukushkin 6-4 5-7 6-4 to reach his sixth semi-final this year. “It’s a great feeling to reach three semi-finals in six weeks. I knew it was going to be a tough week. Beating Tomas Berdych in the first round and getting to the semi-finals has been a great experience.
