Chris Guccione has claimed an impressive scalp as his climb back to the top 100 continues at Tasmania’s Burnie International Challenger event.

The tall Melburnian denied Tomic the opportunity to defend the title he won last year in a hard-fought and extremely tight affair, 6-3 6-7(3) 7-6(5) to move into the final.

Guccione will play Italy’s Flavio Cipolla who ousted Japanese eighth seed Tatsuma Ito in straight sets, 6-4 7-6(3). The final will be Guccione’s first since October last year when he won a Futures tournament in the US.

Rain again caused havoc, delaying the women’s singles semis between Australia’s Karolina Wlodarczak and Saisai Zheng, and Nastja Kolar versus Eugenie Bouchard. While the men’s doubles semis were also delayed.

In the final of the women’s doubles, Australian duo and top seeds Olivia Rogowska and Sally Peers were felled by unseeded Japanese pair Natsumi Hamamura and Erika Takao in three sets 6-2 3-6 [10-7].
