Keegan Oh-Chee (Eastwood, NSW) has won the inaugural Australian Junior Wheelchair Championships this weekend at Melbourne Park.

The No.2 seed did not concede a set for the entire tournament as he claimed the singles’ title against some of Australia’s leading junior wheelchair tennis players. Oh-Chee defeated top seed Henry De Cure (Glenelg North, SA) in a hard-fought final, 7-5 6-3.

Oh-Chee and De Cure are now set to compete in the ITF Junior Masters tournament held in France in late January.

“It feels great to be recognised as the national champion and to help increase the exposure of wheelchair tennis,” Oh-Chee said.

“I’m looking forward to competing overseas next year in places like Korea and South Africa for the World Team Cup. It will be a strong field at the Masters but I will do my best and hopefully I can win it!”

The final standings for the round robin pool were:

1.      Keegan Oh-Chee (Eastwood, NSW)

2.      Henry De Cure (Glenelg North, SA)

3.      Stephan Rochecouste (Glenfield, NSW)

4.      Anderson Parker (Beverly Hills, NSW)

Oh-Chee was also paired with Parker in the doubles final, but was defeated by De Cure and Rochecouste in straight sets, 6-2 6-2.

The players had the privilege of preparing for the tournament under the guidance of Tennis Australia National Wheelchair Coach Greg Crump, who offered the rising stars an insight to the vital components of preparing them for success in the future and for next year’s World Team Cup selections.

Crump was also joined by former Australian wheelchair tennis champion David Hall, who was recently appointed as one of six ITF Wheelchair Tennis Ambassadors to help promote the sport in Australia and worldwide.

“The Championships gave junior wheelchair players another competitive opportunity and created a great vibe,” Crump said.

“Some of the junior players will make the transition to senior players over the next year, while the World Team Cup in South Africa will give them another opportunity to take on other juniors around the world.”

The Australian Junior Wheelchair Championships was one of several tournaments at December Showdown, the curtain-raiser for the tennis season in Australia. The event brought together the best players in each age group for a three-week carnival at Melbourne Park, home of the Australian Open.
