Last week Serena Williams announced she was unready to return to action for the ongoing Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. Now the world no.1, who has called off her entire autumnal Asian swing by also sending her apologies to the China Open which starts in Beijing at the week-end.

The official word from the world no.1’s camp is that she continues to rehab from the surgery necessary to her right foot after treading on broken glass in between winning her 13th Grand Slam singles titles at Wimbledon in early July and playing in the attendance record breaking exhibition match against Kim Clijsters in Brussels five days later.

However a sympathetic physical regime does not seem to have affected Serena’s extra-curricular activities and last week she flew to across the Atlantic Ocean to make a high profile appearance at the London Fashion Week wearing equally all 6ins heeled shoes.

With the end of the competitive year beckoning at the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships in Doha, Williams has only played six ranking tournaments during the course of 2010 although they of course include her title wins at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

In a carefully worded statement, issued by the WTA Tour, Williams said: ““While I have continued to make progress in the recovery of my foot injury, unfortunately I am still not ready to compete.”

Talking about the Pan Pacific Open and China Open, she added: “These are both fantastic events with loyal fans that I hope to be able to compete in next season. In the meantime I am focused on my rehab program and remain optimistic to return to competition this season.” “

World no.2 Caroline Wozniacki is top seed at the Pan Pacific Open and is expected to head the field next week in Beijing.
