Novak Djokovic has played in the long shadows of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for much of the last five years, a regular in Grand Slam semifinals but regularly denied a shot at the title. Djokovic took his first step toward changing his fate yesterday, defeating Federer in a classic five-set semifinal. His reward is a matchup today with Nadal, the eight-time Grand Slam tournament champion who will be looking to complete the career Slam in his first US Open men’s singles final and cement his place among the all-time greats. And while Djokovic enters on the heels of his five-setter against Federer, Nadal rolls into the final having not dropped a set in the tournament. Either way, the US Open will have a first-time men’s singles champion.

Today also features the first all-American boys’ singles final since 2000 (when Andy Roddick defeated Robby Ginepri), with No. 10 seed Denis Kudla taking on USTA Boys’ 18s champion Jack Sock for the US Open boys’ championship. A pair of Americans will face off in the women’s doubles final as well, with Liezel Huber (and partner Nadia Petrova) taking on Vania King (and partner Yaroslava Shvedova) to complete a solid 2010 US Open for the American contingent.
