We as a group here @10sballs_com have been seat holders, players, coaches, agents, PHYSIOS, friends, writers, photographers the entire time! We have been part of this event since it's inception. Where did 40 years go? We will work on a few stories about what we loved at each venue. Take a holiday. For a day or longer. People fly in from all over the world. It's that great!

This lets Simona Halep defend her points -- and that means that she has also defended the #3 ranking. Petra Kvitova will remain stuck at #4. Yanina Wickmayer remains stuck below #65, but she seems finally to be coming back to life; her results here gained her more than a dozen ranking spots.

Serena Williams got off to another of her slow starts here; that seems almost standard operating procedure these days. She was down a break for most of the first set -- and then she got things together. She needs a lot more to assure the #1 ranking, though. Vera Zvonareva at least earned enough points that she ought to hit the Top 200.

This was hard to believe -- Alexandra Panova was up 4-1, 30-0 in the third set. The commentators thought that the double-fault that followed was critical, but whatever the crucial point (if there was one), Panova failed to convert two match points, leaving Maria Sharapova still in the hunt for the #1 ranking. She'll surely have to do better than this, though.
