It has been another picture-perfect week at the Linder Family Tennis Center for the Western & Southern Open. It is true that there may be some other tournaments that are more prestigious so to speak, but it is hard to beat the Cincinnati Masters in terms of fan experience.

What a difference a year makes. In 2013, Roger Federer lost in the second round of Wimbledon, got unceremoniously bounced out of two clay-court events, then lost to nemesis Rafael Nadal in the Cincinnati quarterfinals. One summer later, Federer finished runner-up at Wimbledon and the Rogers Cup and he is now through to the Cincinnati semifinals.
Novak Djokovic's hard-court struggles continued on Thursday with a 7-6(6), 7-5 loss to Tommy Robredo in the third round of the Western & Southern Open. Djokovic is now a modest 2-2 since winning Wimbledon, having previously lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the same stage of last week's Rogers Cup.

John Isner reached the Western & Southern Open final last summer, but there will be no repeat performance in 2014. In fact, no American man will play for the title this time around. That much was guaranteed on Thursday, when the host nation's last two hopes in Isner and Steve Johnson both went down in third-set tiebreakers.
Maybe Novak Djokovic suffered from one too many headlines. This is the one Masters event he has never won, so naturally everyone was wondering if he could win it this year.
Roger Federer's little lapse in the second set meant that he had to spend more than two hours on the court -- hardly what he wanted after his long week in Toronto. But he survived to keep his lead on Stanislas Wawrinka in the contest for #3.
The Thursday, August 14 Day Session (Session 10) is completely sold out and the Western & Southern Open is at tournament capacity for that session. No Center Court, Grandstand or Grounds Pass tickets remain.
Samantha Stosur led in both tiebreaks -- including 4-0 in the first set tiebreak -- but when it came down to it, it was Serena Williams versus Samantha Stosur, and you know who will blink in those situations! That will cost Stosur three ranking spots, but it still looks as if she'll be one of the Top 24 U. S. Open seeds.
Roger Federer kicked off his Western & Southern Open campaign on Wednesday afternoon with a 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-2 win over Vasek Pospisil in the second round. Federer struck six aces without double-faulting a single time to advance after two hours and one minute of play.

Last year heading into the Western & Southern Open, Roger Federer was mired in one of the biggest slumps of his career. The 17-time Grand Slam champion had lost to Sergiy Stakhovsky in the Wimbledon second round, to Federico Delbonis in the Hamburg semifinals, and to Daniel Brands in his opening match in Gstaad. He then skipped the Rogers Cup.
Throughout his illustrious career, Novak Djokovic has captured the title at every single Masters 1000 event except one: the Western & Southern Open. The four-time runner-up has another chance this week in Cincinnati, where he will kick off his campaign on Tuesday night against Gilles Simon.
