Novak Djokovic thrashed outclassed Argentine Diego Schwartzman 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 as the No. 1 began reversing the fragile form which resulted in only two hardcourt match wins after his Wimbledon title victory in early July.
An entertaining first day of U.S. Open action featured four five-setters. At least in terms of days, however, the first round is only one-third of the way complete. The rest of the field will take the court on either Tuesday or Wednesday. Among those still to play their openers are John Isner, Grigor Dimitrov, and David Ferrer.
Roger Federer may not be the No. 1 seed this fortnight, but with no Americans among the top title contenders and 14-time major champion Rafael Nadal on the sideline, Federer is unquestionably No. 1 in the hearts of the majority of U.S. Open fans.

The U.S. Open gets underway on Monday and what should be hot start will feature Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, and Stan Wawrinka. Among those also kicking off their fortnights are Canadians Milos Raonic and Vasek Pospisil plus Toronto champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
The early rounds at the US Open never fail to offer surprising upsets and great tennis – last year 17-year-old Victoria Duval beat former champ Samantha Stosur in round one, Lleyton Hewitt took down Juan Martin del Potro in the second, and 136th ranked Camila Giorgio whipped 6th seed Wozniacki in the third round.
It simply isn't going to feel the same. It has been years since a U. S. Open has been so affected by injury. Defending champion Rafael Nadal is out. So is former champion Juan Martin del Potro. Andy Murray is here, but he clearly isn't himself. Even Novak Djokovic seems to be a little bit off. It is clearly a wide-open field.
After suffering the worst Wimbledon in 103 years, America is not exactly brimful of contenders for the mens singles crown at the US Open that begins in proper three days from now. So when national no.1 John Isner felt a distinct twinge of pain a few hours before his Winston-Salem Open quarterfinal, he had no hesitation in erring on the side of caution and prioritizing being ready for New York.
