Just a few weeks ago Andy Murray’s chances of qualifying for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals seemed minimal but a second title in the space of four weeks, winning the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, has boosted the Scot’s 2014 position to the extent he currently holds eighth place in the Race for London.
Sunday's showdown between David Ferrer and Andy Murray at the Erste Bank Open not only had a title on the line but also World Tour Finals implications. The two veterans entered this week separated by one spot in the race to London, both outside the top eight with Ferrer in ninth and Murray in 10th.
We keep crossing Ernests Gulbis out of London, and it's never quite officially true. But this makes it incredibly close (more in the Feature). Roberto Bautista Agut can't quite make London, but with this, he's up to #14. That's as high as he can go this week, and probably this year, but still, what a breakthrough season!
What in the world has gotten into Irina-Camelia Begu? She has one WTA title (Tashkent 2012) and a couple of other finals (Marbella 2011, Budapest 2011) -- but those were bottom-tier events. And, here, she has beaten two Top Twenty players, Ekaterina Makarova and now Lucie Safarova.
Tennis fans in Georgia are in for a treat as five players in the top-100 of the WTA rankings and 17 of the top-150 are on the entry list for the 2014 Tennis Classic of Macon. If you haven’t heard, the stakes will be higher in 2014 with more prize money, ranking points and the pressure of playing for a berth in the 2015 Australian Open hanging in the balance.

US Open champion Marin Cilic has claimed the fifth spot at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. The Croat will make his debut at the year-end event as he joins Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka in the elite eight-man field at the prestigious tournament, to be held at The O2 in London from 9-16 November.

Bernard Tomic's first tournament with Xavier Malisse in his coaching corner continued on Friday with a 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6) win over Fernando Verdasco in the quarterfinals of the Stockholm Open. At the Kremlin Cup, meanwhile, Ernests Gulbis also prevailed in a third-set tiebreaker. The Latvian held off Andreas Seppi 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(3) to reach the semis.

Jordan @ Agent Atleta Ltd. has announced the signing of Serbian professional tennis player Jovana Jaksic to a management agreement. Jaskic reached the final of the Abierto Monterrey WTA event in March, which marked just the fifth WTA tournament of her young career.
Four legends holding a total of 17 Grand Slam singles titles between them have arrived in Italy for the Grande Sfida, a new ATP Champions Tour event. John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Goran Ivanisevic and Michael Chang were welcomed by 200 members of the media on Thursday afternoon ahead of the two-day event which kicks off in Genoa on Friday and concludes in Milan on Saturday.
Indoor tennis is all about speed of thought. Conditions are controlled, so there are no variables like sun or wind. Tennis balls often bounce lower and generally skid through the court. It all means that players are forced to be aggressive in their shot selection and match tactics.
