For those souls not hardy enough to wake up/stay up for the opening day, it was quite a spillage of seeds on the first day. The newly-formed duo of Paes and Raven Klaasen began their partnership at the start of this season and promptly finished runner-up in Chennai.
This is the 103rd edition of the Australian Championships, which began in 1905, as well as being the 47th Australian Open and the 188th Grand Slam tournament of the Open Era. Melbourne Park hosts the tournament for the 28th year. It was first played here in 1988, when the venue was known as Flinders Park.
Roger Federer and Andy Murray, who have faced each other three times at the Australian Open, could collide in the quarterfinals for a second straight year. That much was confirmed on Friday when the draw ceremony was held at Melbourne Park.
