US Open champion Marin Cilic has claimed the fifth spot at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. The Croat will make his debut at the year-end event as he joins Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka in the elite eight-man field at the prestigious tournament, to be held at The O2 in London from 9-16 November.
Unsurprisingly, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer experienced very different fates at the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Wednesday. Struggling with appendicitis upon his return from three months away due to a wrist injury, Nadal lost his opening match in straight sets to fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. Federer almost bowed out as well despite being a heavy favorite against Leonardo Mayer, but the Swiss saved five match points and survived in a third-set tiebreaker.
Roger Federer will get his chance for extra points after all. Switzerland entered Saturday's action leading Italy 2-0, but they didn't really go in for the kill. Rather than have Federer team with Stan Wawrinka to try to win after three matches, they had Wawrinka play with Marco Chiudinelli.
Roger Federer bounced back from a U.S. Open semifinal loss to eventual champion Marin Cilic by winning the opening singles rubber in this weekend's Davis Cup tie between Switzerland and Italy on Friday. Federer treated the home crowd in Geneva to a 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-4 victory over Simone Bolelli to give the Swiss a 1-0 lead against Italy.
The ITF has announced the latest results for the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group semifinals, World Group play-offs and Zone Group ties taking place on 12-14 September.
Making a quick turnaround following a semifinal showing at the U.S. Open, Roger Federer will be back in action on Friday when Switzerland hosts Italy in the Davis Cup World Group semifinals. The opening day of singles in Geneva will feature a first rubber between Federer and Simone Bolelli, to be followed by Stan Wawrinka vs. Fabio Fognini.
Tennis Channel will provide exclusive live coverage of the U.S. Davis Cup team's competition against Slovakia in Chicago, this weekend, with world-whiparound telecasts at 5 p.m. ET, Friday, Sept. 12; 3 p.m. ET, Saturday, Sept. 13; and 1:30 p.m. ET, Sunday, Sept. 14.
The 2014 tennis season may not be over quite yet, but it will undoubtedly go down as a year of incredible parity on the ATP Tour. Four different men captured Grand Slam titles, including two for the first time. Marin Cilic joined Stanislas Wawrinka as a new major champion by triumphing over fellow first-time slam finalist Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 at the U.S. Open on Monday evening.
Australian Open winner Stan Wawrinka could only admire the will power of Kei Nishikori after the Japanese rebounded from a post-midnight finish in his previous round to beat the Swiss third seed 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7), 6-7 (5), 6-3 for a US Open semi-final place.
Although there have been a few upsets along the way at this year's U.S. Open, they have--unlike on the women's side--been few and far between. That means the quarterfinal lineup is a blockbuster one, with eight seeds having managed to survive and advance. Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Stan Wawrinka are all still alive.
Matches often get cancelled due to rain or, in the case of tournaments without lights, darkness. One--albeit in the legends event--at the U.S. Open on Wednesday got wiped out for much more interesting and unique reason: one of the players was busy coaching one of his own players through a four-hour marathon.
The No. 1 players in the world had to work a little bit of overtime thanks to a five-set marathon between Kei Nishikori and Stan Wawrinka earlier in the day on Wednesday. In the long run, though, it hardly mattered for Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic. Both players won their night-session matches to earn spots in the U.S. Open semifinals.
Nick Kyrgios will get top billing in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Saturday night at the U.S. Open. Perhaps CBS officials called for even bigger names during the day, and they got them. Joining Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray in third-round action are familiar foes John Isner and Philipp Kohlschreiber.
The Thursday, August 14 Day Session (Session 10) is completely sold out and the Western & Southern Open is at tournament capacity for that session. No Center Court, Grandstand or Grounds Pass tickets remain.
“I feel more laid back today than I ever have been," Roger Federer said upon his arrival at this week's Rogers Cup. "I don’t have to prove anything to anybody. For me, it’s about, ‘How do I feel in practice?’ ‘What’s my motivation?’ I can analyze [things] much more clearly than I ever have.
