The singles semifinals, of course, stole all the headlines (well, except this one!) on Thursday at the Australian Open. That was always going to be the case with a lineup featuring Serena Williams vs. Madison Keys, Andy Murray vs. Tomas Berdych, and Maria Sharapova also in action.

Top seed Novak Djokovic showed no sign of the stomach virus which laid him low last week as he joined holder Stan Wawrinka with an overwhelming win into the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday. Djokovic put aside his early loss in Doha which got his 2015 preparation off to a poor start, with the world number one bossing Slovenian Aljaz Bedene 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
This was as close as it looks; the two Czechs were hitting hard and well. But Petra Kvitova has a huge edge in big-match experience, and perhaps it showed.
This is the 103rd edition of the Australian Championships, which began in 1905, as well as being the 47th Australian Open and the 188th Grand Slam tournament of the Open Era. Melbourne Park hosts the tournament for the 28th year. It was first played here in 1988, when the venue was known as Flinders Park.

In its eighth year of Australian Open coverage, Tennis Channel will unveil a live, hourlong, daily introductory show from the Melbourne tournament grounds similar to lead-in programs it uses at the US Open and other events throughout the year.
At least Ana Ivanovic didn't get her blood pressure checked. She took a timeout during the match, but it was to have an existing abdominal strain re-taped. She still produced a quality match, coming back from a 4-1 deficit in the first set before struggling in the last two.
A new era in Australian men's tennis is soon to be upon us--if it's not already here. At 33 years old, Lleyton Hewitt's career appears to be coming to a close. Meanwhile, the other end of the career spectrum is ushering in teenagers Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis.
