With the exception of 2011 champion Petra Kvitova, it was a treat to see new names in the frame for a place in Saturday’s final, when the women’s semi-finals were played on Thursday.
Only one champion remains in the women’s draw as two Czech lefties Lucie Safarova and Petra Kvitova will face each other in the semi-final. Kvitova owns the head to head 5-0 but they have had some humdinger of matches.
Most of the buzz in the tennis world on this last Wednesday of Wimbledon is about the men who have bowed out in the last few days. Great Britain’s hopes for a repeat of last year have been dashed. The man who was a winner then was the first British champ in 77 years.
Wimbledon passes on announcements with an aura of grandeur that often outstrips the issue itself. The second Tuesday though, brought about a communiqué that outlined a sad statistic, at least where US players are concerned. This is the first time since 1911 that no Americans remain in competition in either the women or men’s side of the draws.
It’s the first Thursday of that fortnight known as The Championships. As surprising as this may be to tennis followers, it rained during competition at Wimbledon. It was the end of the day and only a few matches were held in tennis limbo on the women’s side.
Now this looks like the Petra Kvitova who won Wimbledon. And she's the only seed left in her half. Make the final and she'll be just below the Top Five; win the title and she's in.
This past weekend Michaela Krajicek , Misa to her family & friends said yes to the marriage proposal done on court by her sweet and handsome beau of this past year. Martin Emmrich from Germany is the lucky guy. He currently holds the world ATP dubs ranking of 50.

The 2014 French Open concluded this Sunday, with Rafael Nadal lifting the trophy on Men’s side for the ninth time and Maria Sharapova taking her second French Open title on the Women’s side on Saturday respectfully.
It was Maria Sharapova holding the trophy at the finish of the women’s singles at Roland Garros. It was the second longest women’s final in the history of the tournament. Sharapova and her opponent Simona Halep traded the lead throughout the long sets. It was an extraordinarily exciting final after last year’s romp by Serena Williams.
Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep have a date on Saturday. They will meet in the women’s singles final.
Rain began in the wee hours of Wednesday morning and it continued most of the day, putting quite a hitch in the plans for quarterfinal play at Roland Garros. An umbrella was the most popular accessory.
