The post-Wimbledon horrors continue for Eugenie Bouchard. This was almost as lopsided as the score. Not how Bouchard wanted to go into the U. S. Open! She won less than half her service points -- even on first serves, she won only 51% of the points.
Following the withdrawal of Kristina Mladenovic (playing with Timea Babos) due to lumbar spine injury, prior to the commencement of the Main Draw Doubles, the team of Medina Garrigues/Shvedova become Seed #5 moving to line 5.
Former US Open Champion and World No. 22 Sam Stosur and 2013 Wimbledon semifinalist Kirsten Flipkens have been awarded the final singles main draw wildcards into the Connecticut Open presented by United Technologies, a WTA event that is part of the Emirates Airline US Open Series to be held August 15-23, 2014 at the Connecticut Tennis Center, it was announced today by Tournament Director Anne Worcester.
Samantha Stosur led in both tiebreaks -- including 4-0 in the first set tiebreak -- but when it came down to it, it was Serena Williams versus Samantha Stosur, and you know who will blink in those situations! That will cost Stosur three ranking spots, but it still looks as if she'll be one of the Top 24 U. S. Open seeds.
As we write, there is a rain delay in Montreal, and it isn't the first of the day. It looks as if the showers won't last long, but the schedule is pretty badly bollixed. We're going to send this now and possibly send another edition later.
American women have claimed eleven titles at Wimbledon over the past fifteen years. Ten of those titles belong to women who have the last name Williams and the other belongs to Lindsay Davenport. Maybe it’s the name of the “trophy”.
The only sure thing about Roland Garros is the terre battue. The dust leaves its mark on anyone who passes through the gates, whether they are a contender, a world number one or a spectator.
The ITF has announced the draws for the 2014 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group semifinals, and World Group and World Group II play-offs taking place on 19-20 April.
Based on current rankings, these seedings should have been reversed -- Sloane Stephens came in ranked #16, Caroline Wozniacki #18. But you would never have known it! And, because Stephens was defending 140 points and Wozniacki only 80, that will reverse -- Stephens will fall to no better than #18, with Wozniacki probably #17 and with the chance to go higher.
Mathematical memo to Maria Sharapova and her entourage: During the first two sets of Sharapova's match with Lucie Safarova, she was winning 34% of second serve points. At the same time, she was putting in 64% of first serves, and winning 70% of those points. Had she fired a first serve on her second serve, she would have double-faulted dozens of times but would have won 45% of second serve points.
Alexandra Cadantu won't move above her current #59, but Coco Vandeweghe looks as if she just might have a shot at a Top Hundred return -- especially since she faces Petra Kvitova next, and if nothing else there is the chance that Kvitova will get sick again...
