Indian Wells

Singles – First Round: Aleksandra Wozniak def. Urszula Radwanska 6-2 6-0

It’s starting to feel as if Urszula Radwanska tried to come back a little too soon. She will lose another half dozen or so ranking spots, leaving her in the #60 range.

Singles – First Round: Karolina Pliskova def. (Q) Michelle Larcher de Brito 6-2 3-6 6-2

Karolina Pliskova just fell below #60, and this won’t get her back, but she might gain a spot or two. She leaves Michelle Larcher de Brito below #100.

Singles – First Round: (WC) Taylor Townsend def. Karin Knapp 7-6(7-1) 6-1

A big win for Taylor Townsend, but unfortunately for her, she made the second round last year also (having beaten Lucie Hradecka in the first round), so unless she can beat Flavia Pennetta in the second round, she will fall from #337 to around #370. The loss raises a real possibility that Karin Knapp could fall out of the Top Fifty.

Singles – First Round: Julia Goerges def. Jana Cepelova 6-1 2-6 6-3

Julia Goerges has fallen so far that this is actually an upset; at #86, she came here ranked 11 spots below Jana Cepelova. And even though Cepelova will stay stuck around #75, the gap might widen; Goerges still has more to defend.

Singles – First Round: Zheng Jie def. Paula Ormaecha 3-6 6-3 7-6(7-5)

This took three hours, less about two and a half minutes, and Zheng Jie’s reward for all that effort is that she now has to face China’s #1 player Li Na. If Zheng can win that, she’ll be close to the Top Fifty, but what are the odds?

Singles – First Round: Ajla Tomljanovic def. Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-4 7-6(7-2)

This will drop Lourdes Dominguez Lino below #70.

Singles – First Round: Alisa Kleybanova def. (WC) Victoria Duval 5-7 6-4 6-4

This took two and three-quarter hours; no lead was safe, and there were time when it seemed certain that the scoreboard had simply conked out. But Alisa Kleybanova finally won, and will rise from #142 to around #130.

Singles – First Round: (Q) Camila Giorgi def. Andrea Petkovic 6-7(5-7) 6-3 6-3

Andrea Petkovic was the top unseeded player, ranked more than 40 places above Camila Giorgi, so this is a substantial upset. Petkovic remains stuck below #35.

Singles – First Round: Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor def. Galina Voskoboeva 6-1 1-0, retired

A bit of an upset, but Galina Voskoboeva is pretty inconsistent even when she is healthy. She’ll likely be just below #60. Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor will likely rise above #70 if she can win her next match.

Singles – First Round: Francesca Schiavone def. Mona Barthel 3-6 6-2 6-2

Curiously, for both men and women, six of the first nine matches to begin on this day went three sets. Which just means more disappointment for struggling Mona Barthel, who was defending 140 points and will wind up probably around #80.

Singles – First Round: (WC) Coco Vandeweghe def. Alexandra Cadantu 6-4 6-0

Alexandra Cadantu won’t move above her current #59, but Coco Vandeweghe looks as if she just might have a shot at a Top Hundred return — especially since she faces Petra Kvitova next, and if nothing else there is the chance that Kvitova will get sick again….

Singles – First Round: (Q) Barbora Zahlavova Strycova def. Vania King 6-0 3-6 6-2

Here again we have a case of a qualifier being ranked higher than her opponent. And climbing. Barbora Zahlavova Strycova is now just below the Top Sixty; Vania King will be #69 or lower.

Singles – First Round: Monica Niculescu def. Marina Erakovic 6-2 6-2

These two came in ranked just one place apart, but you’d never know it from the score! Marina Erakovic loses any chance to make the Top Sixty; Monica Niculescu still needs one more win to defend her points, but this should keep her above #70.

Singles – First Round: (WC) Donna Vekic def. (Q) Olivia Rogowska 6-0 7-5

Donna Vekic came in at #103, so she has a good shot at a Top Hundred return this week.

Singles – First Round: Caroline Garcia def. Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-3 7-5

This ends any possibility of Bethanie Mattek-Sands returning to the Top Fifty.

Singles – First Round: Elina Svitolina def. Monica Puig 6-4 7-5

At this time last year, Elina Svitolina didn’t have to worry about required events; her ranking was too low. So she loses an optional event this week, meaning that she hasn’t gained many points yet. But she is getting close to the Top Forty.

Doubles – First Round: (1) Hsieh/Peng def. Aoyama/Kalashnikova 6-1 6-2

Hsieh/Peng are guaranteed to remain #1 and #2 after Indian Wells, but their margin could have been pretty thin. It looks like they want some insurance.

Doubles – First Round: (2) Makarova/Vesnina def. H Chan/Huber 6-7(5-7) 6-4 10-8

Talk about a horrid match to have to try to follow when the live scoreboard kept cutting out! Leads went every which way, and it took almost two hours — quite a while for a doubles match. But the defending champions survived, coming back from 5-3 down in the match tiebreak. They’ll need more to stay Top Five, though.

Doubles – First Round: (WC) Kuznetsova/Stosur def. (3) Errani/Vinci 6-3 3-6 10-6

Although Errani/Vinci came here ranked co-#6, they are co-#3 in safe points (this because #3 Vesnina and #4 Makarova were last year’s champions, and #5 Srebotnik was a finalist). The Italians still look likely to rise, but their failure to do anything here is a blow to their long-term prospects.

Doubles – First Round: (5) Black/Mirza def. (WC) Keys/Riske 6-2 6-4

Sania Mirza is very likely to hit the Top Ten this week; Cara Black is also within reach although she will need at least a final. We currently show the Top Ten as follows:

1 (1) PENG 8265*

2 (2) HSIEH 8125*

3 (6) ERRANI 7270

3 (6) VINCI 7270

5 (5) SREBOTNIK 7040*

6 (3) VESNINA 6740*

7 (4) MAKAROVA 6640*

8 (9) PESCHKE 5350*

9 (11) MIRZA 5255*

10 (10) HLAVACKOVA 5220

Doubles – First Round: (7) Barty/Dellacqua def. (WC) Hingis/Lisicki 6-4 6-7(7-9) 10-6

Sabine Lisicki and Martina Hingis and have been getting along very well as player and coach, which is why they decided to play doubles. It is not clear that they will continue. But this frankly already looks better than Hingis did last year with Daniela Hantuchova; Barty/Dellacqua are a very strong team. Dellacqua still has more to defend — she has semifinalist points coming off — but Barty is on the brink of the Top Fifteen.

Doubles – First Round: Medina Garrigues/Shvedova def. Jans-Ignacik/Melzer 6-4 7-6(10-8)

Between them, Klaudia Jans-Ignacik and Iveta Melzer have more rust than the ruins of your father’s Studebaker. To do this well against a pretty good team seems rather promising, considering.

Doubles – First Round: Mladenovic/Pennetta def. Kudryavtseva/Rodionova 6-2 6-4

There was a brief period, a little after 4:00 Indian Wells time, when it seemed as if no lead around here meant anything. Kleybanova/Duval saw each player winning points in random streaks, Makarova/Vesnina versus Chan/Huber witnessed the seeded team trying all-out to blow leads — and Mladenovic/Pennetta were on the verse of blowing a 5-2 second set lead. But eventually they held on — and the other matches, if they weren’t exactly resolved, managed to reach conclusions soon after. It was almost like dominoes.

Doubles – First Round: Goerges/Groenefeld def. Chuang/Scheepers 6-4 6-4
