Roger Federer capped off an otherwise disappointing day for the top players in the world by outlasting Marin Cilic 7-6(5), 6-7(3), 6-4 on Thursday night during third-round action at the Rogers Cup. Fededer needed seven match points over two hours and 39 minutes of play to book a spot in the quarterfinals.
With less than three weeks to go before the U.S. Open, the Rogers Cup gives players not only a chance for success at a big tournament but it also opens the door for a major ranking improvement and perhaps a seeded spot at the year's final Grand Slam. So far in Toronto, Julien Benneteau and Ivan Dodig are taking advantage.

The good news delivered by the United States contingent in the Rogers Cup first round was turned upside down on Wednesday. Americans compiled a 4-1 record heading into the last 32 of this Masters 1000 event, but all four winners went down in their second matches. It was not, however, due to a lack of effort.

It could be a long week for Roger Federer at the Rogers Cup, with a Masters 1000 event to play, a 33rd birthday to celebrate on Friday, a hockey game on Sunday, and plenty of fanfare surrounding the new paint-job on his racket. Federer wasted no time, however, in getting off the court in his first match on Tuesday night.

In 2013, Roger Federer went back to clay to test out a new racket in between Wimbledon and the U.S. Open Series. This time around, however, there was no sign of the 17-time Grand Slam champion.
It was a surprising day of action for the American contingent at the Rogers Cup on Monday. John Isner, Tim Smyczek, and Michael Russell took the court, with only Isner (vs. Ivan Dodig) being a considerable favorite. As it turned out, however, only Isner took a loss.
