Wimbledon passes on announcements with an aura of grandeur that often outstrips the issue itself. The second Tuesday though, brought about a communiqué that outlined a sad statistic, at least where US players are concerned. This is the first time since 1911 that no Americans remain in competition in either the women or men’s side of the draws.
The first week of Wimbledon has come and gone and the second will begin without either Williams sister.( in singles , they are playing doubles together , and have a second round match on Monday) . Venus Williams lost arguably the best match of the women's tournament so far, as she went down to Petra Kvitova 5-7, 7-6(2), 7-5 on Friday.
Keys: "I'm just so incredibly happy. It's one of those things where when you're training and you don't want to be there, you're tired or everything hurts, you think of this moment, and it really helps push you through all of the hard times. I'm just incredibly happy right now. I'm so incredibly honored to be another name on this trophy...
On a sunny day in Eastbourne the defending WTA champion joined the seed carnage of the early rounds as she bowed out to USA power-hitter Madison Keys. She books herself an all-American clash with Lauren Davis who put paid to former champion Daniela Hantuchova in some style with a straight sets 6-3 6-3 win.

The USTA and U.S. Fed Cup Captain Mary Joe Fernandez today announced that world No. 18 and 2013 Australian Open semifinalist Sloane Stephens, No. 42 Madison Keys, No. 49 Varvara Lepchenko and No. 57 Christina McHale will represent the United States in the 2014 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Playoff against France.
Tennis players Sloane Stephens, World No. 18, and Madison Keys, World No. 36, played tennis on a temporary court built in near the Charleston harbor for a promotional shoot for the Family Circle Cup. The 42nd Family Circle Cup is currently taking place in Charleston, SC, March 29 – April 6.
Based on current rankings, these seedings should have been reversed -- Sloane Stephens came in ranked #16, Caroline Wozniacki #18. But you would never have known it! And, because Stephens was defending 140 points and Wozniacki only 80, that will reverse -- Stephens will fall to no better than #18, with Wozniacki probably #17 and with the chance to go higher.
Still no significant wins for Vera Zvonareva in her comeback (she did beat one wildcard ranked #357). At least she gets the showing-up points, which will help a little; she should go from #634 to around #580.

Gael Monfils, who is committed to play in the BB&T Atlanta Open for the first time in 2014 and is excited about it: “I like to play in front of anybody. I like to play for a full crowd and I like to play on the American hard courts. If the crowd gets into the action, that makes it even better. I'm looking forward to playing in front of the fans in Atlanta for the first time.”
This clearly wasn't a case of Alize Cornet not caring. At 2-5 down in the first set, she was sobbing as she talked to her coach. But what could either of them do? Cornet can't hope to out-hit Venus Williams; all she could do was try to get balls back.
