Former finalist and sixth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber broke a two-match losing streak against his fellow German, qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff, Tuesday at the Generali Open in Kitzbuhel.
Austrian wild card Dennis Novak scored his first ATP World Tour match win on his home soil at the Generali Open in Kitzbühel on Monday. The 21 year old, who is coached by top seed Dominic Thiem’s father, Wolfgang Thiem, beat Aljaz Bedene 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-1 in two hours and 11 minutes.
Washington, D.C. is actually no longer part of the U.S. Open Series, so it would not be accurate to say that said series is going to heat up this week. But it is true that the American hard-court swing is taking its talents to new heights starting on Monday.
Check out the latest draws and order of play from the men's & ladies' tennis at the Citi Open, the men's tennis from the Generali Open, and the ladies' tennis from the Bank of the West Classic taking place next week.
We are into the final few weeks leading up to the U.S. Open and almost nobody has more momentum than Milos Raonic and David Goffin. Raonic followed up his Wimbledon semifinal showing with a title on Sunday in Washington, D.C. Goffin is on a streak of 20 consecutive match wins and he captured his first career ATP title on Saturday in Kitzbuhel.
One way or another, we were guaranteed a first-time winner here. Not only were both players in their first finals, neither had ever made a semifinal before. David Goffin had three ATP quarterfinals (Chennai 2012, Winston-Salem 2012, Valencia 2012); Dominic Thiem had two (Kitzbuhel and Vienna 2013).
Twenty matches since Wimbledon. Twenty wins for David Goffin. The first 15 of those 20 earned him three consecutive Challenger titles, but the most recent five this week were the ones that mattered most.
Maybe we should have taken the idea of Donald Young as the American #2 more seriously. Kevin Anderson will remain below the Top Twenty, but Young moves past Sam Querrey, Jack Sock, and Steve Johnson; he is on the brink of the Top Fifty.
Something will have to give on Saturday when Dominic Thiem and David Goffin vie for the bet-at-home Cup title. Thiem is playing at home and on what is becoming his favorite surface. Goffin, however, has won an incredible 19 matches in a row since Wimbledon.
