Former finalist and sixth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber broke a two-match losing streak against his fellow German, qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff, Tuesday at the Generali Open in Kitzbuhel. The 2012 runner-up struck 14 aces for a 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3 victory over two hours. He’ll next face Santiago Giraldo in the second round.

Nicolas Almagro, a winner of 12 ATP World Tour clay-court titles, fired down 20 aces to sixth seed Jiri Vesely’s10 aces in a 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-4 win. He’s now looking to improve a 2-3 FedEx ATP Head2Head record against wild card Jurgen Melzer, who saved nine of 10 break points for a 7-6(3), 6-3 win over Daniel Gimeno-Traver.

Earlier in the day, lucky loser Albert Montanes, who replaced the injured Simone Bolelli in the main draw, struck seven aces past wild card Gerald Melzer in a 6-4, 7-6(5) win over one hour and 39 minutes.

Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer set a second-round meeting with in-form countryman and top seed Dominic Thiem after defeating Brazilian Joao Souza 7-6(2), 6-4.

The 21-year-old Thiem is undefeated in eight straight matches, including a victory over Haider-Maurer in the Umag quarter-finals two weeks ago. He is looking to win his third title in as many weeks following his triumphs in Umag (d. Sousa) and Gstaad (d. Goffin).

Serbian Dusan Lajovic, meanwhile, defeated Russian Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-4 and will next meet No. 2 seed Andreas Seppi.
