After missing almost all of 2014 due to left-wrist surgery, Juan Martin Del Potro appeared to be ready for a full slate of action this year when he returned in Sydney. Despite an encouraging quarterfinal performance, the Argentine suffered another setback and was promptly sidelined by an additional procedure...

The saddest news to come on the eve of the Australian Open was that Juan Martin del Potro, was forced to withdraw from the Australian Open because the wrist problems that had plagued him for much of the last few years hadn’t cleared up sufficiently for him to consider risking the possible rigors of a best of five sets Grand Slam event.
Nick Kyrgios joined fellow Aussies Sam Groth, Marinko Matosevic and Pat Cash at the Apia International Sydney players’ party before getting down to business on the tennis court. Juan Martin del Potro, Fabio Fognini, Philipp Kohlschreiber and Eric Butorac were some of the other players in attendance.
Snagging one of the 32 seeds at a Grand Slam has its benefits. Most importantly, you cannot meet another seed until at least the third round. Garner a top 24 seed and you're guaranteed to avoid the likes of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal until no earlier than the last 16. A seed does not, however, entirely exempt you from danger.
If Juan Martin Del Potro had been in the business of moral victories on Tuesday, who could have blamed him? After all, he had not played in more than 10 months due to wrist surgery. Simply playing a tennis match was a monumental occasion for the affable Argentine.
Juan Martin Del Potro is back.
For the first time since playing doubles with Marin Cilic at last year’s Indian Wells Masters, Del Potro will take the court this week at the Apia International in Sydney.
It did not take long for Roberto Bautista Agut to begin his Most Improved Player of the Year campaign in 2014. Russian tennis star, Maria Sharapova and boyfriend Grigor Dimitrov confirmed their participation for the XXII edition of the 2015 Mexican Tennis Open held in Acapulco from February 23-28. While Dimitrov will be back for seconds after winning the men’s field in 2014 against Kevin Anderson, this will be Sharapova’s first time playing in the famed Mexican resort town.
The 2014 tennis season may not be over quite yet, but it will undoubtedly go down as a year of incredible parity on the ATP Tour. Four different men captured Grand Slam titles, including two for the first time. Marin Cilic joined Stanislas Wawrinka as a new major champion by triumphing over fellow first-time slam finalist Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 at the U.S. Open on Monday evening.
The early rounds at the US Open never fail to offer surprising upsets and great tennis – last year 17-year-old Victoria Duval beat former champ Samantha Stosur in round one, Lleyton Hewitt took down Juan Martin del Potro in the second, and 136th ranked Camila Giorgio whipped 6th seed Wozniacki in the third round.
It simply isn't going to feel the same. It has been years since a U. S. Open has been so affected by injury. Defending champion Rafael Nadal is out. So is former champion Juan Martin del Potro. Andy Murray is here, but he clearly isn't himself. Even Novak Djokovic seems to be a little bit off. It is clearly a wide-open field.
