Having to play Rafael Nadal as early as the quarterfinals in consecutive Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters events is bad luck for David. But it is a similarly difficult draw for Nadal. After all, it was Ferrer who got the best of last year's quarterfinal showdown.
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal wasted no time winning their opening matches at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters on Wednesday afternoon. Federer trounced Jeremy Chardy 6-2, 6-1 and Nadal advanced by the exact same scoreline at the expense of Lucas Pouille.

Novak Djokovic pulled double duty to take the suspense out of the first-round Davis Cup tie between Serbia and Croatia. Djokovic won his singles match on Friday then teamed up with Nenad Zimonjic to take Saturday's doubles rubber in Kraljevo.

A pair of blockuster quarterfinal lineups are on hand for Friday at the Memphis Open and the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament. In Memphis, American fans will be treated to five of their own in action. In Rotterdam, among those still alive in the title hunt are Tomas Berdych, Gael Monfils, Stan Wawrinka, and Gilles Muller.
Tomas Berdych struggled to close out his first-round match at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament on Tuesday, but he managed to get the job done against Tobias Kamke. Berdych, who led 6-1, 5-1, twice failed to serve out the proceedings before finally sealing the deal on his third time of asking for a 6-1, 7-5 victory.
The Australian Open has come and gone, with the Happy Slam giving way to what is often perceived as a not-so-happy month in the tennis world. In a sense, we are in the calm after the storm. Then again, this is also the beginning of what is by far the busiest month on tour—not in terms of quality, of course, but without question in quantity.
