David Goffin improved his amazing winning streak to 25 matches by defeating Jarkko Nieminen 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the third round of the Winston-Salem Open on Wednesday afternoon.
After two and three-quarter hours, leading 6-5 in the tiebreak and serving, Donald Young double-faulted. Two points later, he was out of the tournament. Garcia-Lopez is one win away from the Top Thirty; Young loses his chance to rise above his current #46.
It's no secret that we are in the midst of a rough patch for American men's tennis--certainly on the singles front. The trials and tribulations of the United States contingent are well-documented. It has been more than a decade since an American man won a Grand Slam title (Andy Roddick at the 2003 U.S. Open).
The U.S. Open may be on the minds of players and fans like, but don't forget about this week's Winston-Salem Open. It gives the ATP World Tour stars a final opportunity for match practice heading into New York. Among those looking to take advantage are Americans John Isner, Steve Johnson, Donald Young, and Sam Querrey.
The good news delivered by the United States contingent in the Rogers Cup first round was turned upside down on Wednesday. Americans compiled a 4-1 record heading into the last 32 of this Masters 1000 event, but all four winners went down in their second matches. It was not, however, due to a lack of effort.
Donald Young and Jack Sock capped off an impressive first-round showing by American men at the Rogers Cup when they prevailed on Tuesday
One way or another, we were guaranteed a first-time winner here. Not only were both players in their first finals, neither had ever made a semifinal before. David Goffin had three ATP quarterfinals (Chennai 2012, Winston-Salem 2012, Valencia 2012); Dominic Thiem had two (Kitzbuhel and Vienna 2013).

Maybe we should have taken the idea of Donald Young as the American #2 more seriously. Kevin Anderson will remain below the Top Twenty, but Young moves past Sam Querrey, Jack Sock, and Steve Johnson; he is on the brink of the Top Fifty.
RadioTennis.com's live Day 3 coverage of BB&T Atlanta Open is now on the air (Monday:7/21/14).
One day after Wimbledon, the ATP World Tour will not only return to 250-point action but it will also make its way back to clay. Joining Bastad and Stuttgart--both of which are being played on the red stuff--on the schedule is the season's final grass-court event in Newport, Rhode Island.
As an indication of progress for Bernard Tomic, this is relatively promising. It's no help to his ranking, though. Richard Gasquet will get to add points if he can win any more matches, but he can't rise above #14 this week.
The Eastbourne organisers must be drowning their sorrows in ice-cream by the sea-side as wildcard fourth seed, former World No. 1 and two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka joined Agnieszka Radwanska on an early train back to Wimbledon.
Finland's Jarkko Nieminen earned an upset of Colombian seventh seed Santiago Giraldo 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 as the smaller men's event took a definite second billing to the women also on at Devonshire Park.
The full entry list for the BB&T Atlanta Open, the first stop during this summer's U.S. Open Series, was revealed earlier this week. Among others rounding out the field are Lleyton Hewitt, Radek Stepanek, Dmitry Tursunov, Vasek Pospisil, and 2013 runner-up Kevin Anderson.
