A high-quality battle in the second round of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament on Thursday saw Stan Wawrinka overcome familiar foe Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-2. Wawrinka fired eight aces without double-faulting as he advanced in two hours and 15 minutes.

Milos Raonic kept his World Tour Finals chances afloat by fighting past Donald Young 6-4, 6-7(5), 7-6(2) in the second round of the Swiss Indoors Basel on Thursday. It was an especially important victory because fellow London contender David Ferrer advanced to the quarterfinals at the Valencia Open. Ferrer downed fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-2.
It has been a rough week for Americans in Basel, Valencia, and in Singapore. Steve Johnson lost his Swiss Indoors Basel opener to Milos Raonic 7-6(4), 6-4. John Isner and Stefan Kozlov, the only two USA representatives in the Valencia singles draw, lost in the first round. Even Serena Williams suffered a shocking 6-0, 6-2 defeat to Simona Halep at the women's year-end championship.

The two U.S. Open finalists are having no trouble where they left off in New York. Champion Marin Cilic is through to the China Open quarterfinals and runner-up Kei Nishikori has advanced to the last eight in Tokyo. Cilic took care of Joao Sousa 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday, while Nishikori got past Donald Young 6-4, 7-6(4) in his quarterfinal match.
Novak Djokovic extended his perfect record at the China Open to 21-0 by defeating Vasek Pospisil 6-3, 7-5 on Wednesday afternoon. Djokovic, who is looking to win a fifth title in Beijing, needed one hour and 25 minutes to reach the quarterfinals. He is joined there by John Isner, a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(4) winner over Tommy Robredo.
America has some great tennis players. A whole heap of them. Some still in the juniors to all the way up to players in their mid thirties.
The U.S. Open gets underway on Monday and what should be hot start will feature Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, and Stan Wawrinka. Among those also kicking off their fortnights are Canadians Milos Raonic and Vasek Pospisil plus Toronto champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
